I never played this but the costumes are so pretty!

Because nothing says appealing and bad-ass like frumpy robes and sandals. I don't know what's going on in that game, but I'm hardpressed to think of any situation I'd want to wear that in.

Cold places like caves would seem like the obvious answer? I think the one on the left is standing in a cave

Whoa, Mr. Mad!

It looks inspired by traditional outfits of people in mountainous regions. From cursory Google searches, Peruvian seems closest in terms of overall design, sandals and all; and maybe Mongolian wear, too. Personally, I dig 'em.

Those are really cute costumes. I had never seen this game (assuming it's a game) before.

Oh, that is adorable!

Though personally, I wish we could have female characters wearing ridiculous improbable clothing that isn't massively skimpy. Guys get oversized swords and straps and widgets in weird places, why can't the girls get some of that action?

Those remind me of Final Fantasy Tactics costume designs, which I just adored. If I ever cosplay something, it will be from that game.

They are cute, but badass? Not really seeing it.

Ditto. I cannot see a long robe-thing like that as badass. I want trousers at least, not a skirt. Skirts, to my mind, are not practical for action.

Agreed. (Actually, I only think the one on the right is attractive, but the one on the left is at least not actively unappealing.) 2/3 ain't bad as they say, and I like the designs, but...yeah.

One thing that comes to mind is exactly what counts as "badass". To me, it has always implied "Ass-kicking Action Person", no matter the gender. Those robes? They don't look conducive to high-action fighting, instead look like something - to my D&D-influenced mind - would be better suited for second row teammates, like mages and healers/clerics/white mages.
I feel a need for trousers or leggings on badass women, and if they have coats/robes/whatever over them, something designed for freedom of movement.

But I don't know this game, so I can't assess how it pulls off outfits like that in play.

Ahh, if you check out the other classes in the game, you'll see what I meant! I didn't have enough space to put more examples while making the secret legible. Sorry for the confusion.

I hate how fandom only approves of female outfits if they're carbon copy of men's. It reeks of "I'm not like those other skanky sluts, look at me!" kind of thinking.
