The most explicitly gay character they've ever had is Pleakley from Lilo and Stitch. Over the course of the first movie, the subsequent movie, the TV series and the final "made for TV" movie, he and Jumba went from reluctant partners to best friends to a de-facto "aunt and uncle" for Lilo, and Pleakley had an episode that was a blatant allegory for coming out as gay to his parents, in which he's afraid to admit that he doesn't want to get married to some girl from back home and that he likes wearing earth women's clothing. He also nearly gets married to Jumba as part of the farce, who for his part seems pretty damn nonplussed about the whole thing, even griping at one point when the wedding is interrupted.
But still, even though Pleakley is gay-coded so goddamn hard it hurts, Disney still has an issue with pulling the trigger and calling it what it is, or showing romance between human (or humanoid) men or women.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 01:05 am (UTC)(link)The original show really pushed the bromance between Corey and Shawn though. Topanga actually said that she knew Corey loved Shawn more than her. They're still doing it even in the new show.
