I am SO INCREDIBLY SICK of hearing about Hamilton.
b!s: sometimes I don't understand why tumblr (especially the SJ parts) is so willing to cream themselves over this. Underneath the casting and the rap, this is just another story about a bunch of white people, isn't it? Like, shouldn't you guys be holding out for LMM to write a musical about Alexandre Dumas, Vicente Guerrero, Toussaint Louverture, Charlotte Ray, etc? FFS.

Oh, man, I want a Toussaint l'Ouverture musical now. With a white cast and country songs.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think they like it because it's good and it's diverse and it's a work of genius. I don't think they're actually racial separatists who demand that everything be completely POC. At least not many of them.

I'm sorry that you don't care for it and don't like hearing about it. I hope that you can deal with this unpleasant experience without turning it into a wank-filled vitriolic argument where one side is the devil.

No worries. I posted this to F!S precisely to lower the odds of me screaming its contents into the face of some totally awesome person who just wants to squee about a thing they fan.

I linked a friend to this and then had to swear up and down that this wasn't me. XD

I don't even think it's a bad musical, but I think there are a lot of race-related things about the reception to it that aren't getting addressed. And I am very, very sick of being told I absolutely HAVE to see it, and more so that when I see it I HAVE to like it or there's something wrong with me.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
What race-related things do you think haven't been addressed? Even just briefly.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I for one would love to see a musical about Dumas.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
That would be amazing. He led a very interesting life. I'm not sure what the climax of the production would be though.

I feel like there could be such wank about the casting.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
But maybe I'm wrong.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I've been meaning to get round to watching this and this secret just reminded me of the musical's existence. Sorry anon, I know that you probably didn't make this secret wanting more people to watch it.

Heh. No, I'm mostly suffering from overexposure (the idea of temporarily forgetting its existence sounds like a beautiful pipe dream, at this point). I hope you do watch it and enjoy it, and post many delighted things about it where I don't have to see them. :P

It looks like an awesome piece of work and I wish I could see it. Maybe it'll go on tour before I'm old and arthritic.

A Dumas musical would be cool too.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there is this post?

http://thequintessentialqueer.tumblr.com/post/134868530418/i-love-hamilton-but-something-about-the-way-white

But yeah, it cracks me up that people are acting like all these people (except for Jefferson) were these awesome cool people! Since they're being played by POC's, ignoring the fact that, by modern standards, they'd all be ~problematic~

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
But didn't the writers and actors themselves say that they thought at least some of the people portrayed in the musical - the title character, for one - were pretty awesome and cool by the time's standards (though yes, still problematic by today's) and the reason it was written was because they're the ones that tend to be overlooked in historical narratives? I don't think they'd agree with what that post is saying about their creation.

Thank you for the link, anon, that commentary is extremely RTMI! And yes, you have understood precisely what I meant to say.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I love history so I'm going to check this out. I'm not on tumblr so I'm unaffected by people's opinions of it's greatness/stupidity. Is it on youtube? Gonna go check. Thx, f!s, for yet again showing me some cool sort of media going on.

"Hamilton" is cool and it made me thought of something: I wish "Elisabeth" comes here to the states, so that the US could see a musical about Austrian politics and an Empress who is in love with Death.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
This exists? That sounds really interesting!

Off to Google!

Just here to second this. Good God but "Elisabeth" deserves so much more recognition than it already has.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
But I like white people.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Although sure, those characters are still based off of white historical figures, the musical is able to do some unique things by telling their story with non white actors/historically non white music:

conflate the revolutionary politics of people of color today with the revolutionary politics of the founding fathers

conflate rap and hip hop with the revolutionary war, the declaration of independence, the national anthem... symbols of America that rarely include a black narrative, despite black people totally being part of our countries history, and not just as slaves.

So I think that although a hit musical about historical people of color would rock, it's not like this one is just paying lip service to white people and saying or doing nothing else.

Heaven forbid there be musicals about white people.

Because PoC have been erased over and over again in the narrative of history and this is a way of reclaiming some form of representation. Yes, LMM could tell stories about other historical PoC. But people are going to enjoy this because this is a show that is current, and do. You don't, and that's fine. *shrug*
