In longer ship fanfiction stories, I almost always find that the story and characterization goes to shit as soon as they get together.

I find this very believable.

Yeah. It happens a lot in TV shows, too. It's as if once the romance is achieved, the bottom falls out of the plot. Or because the show has focused so much on the romance and "will they get together?" question, the main source of conflict (and therefore interest) is the relationship itself. So you end up with dumb plots about romantic misunderstandings, angst, break ups, getting back together, etc. etc.

This is one of my biggest fears when writing.

Hell, I have it right now and it is one of the reasons my in-progress story has come to a stop.

Yeah same. It sucks it when they get together and then there's like five more chapters to go, because I didn't sign up for established relationship. The story/characters always seem lose whatever was compelling me to keep reading at that point.

The best fics keep me on edge with the will-they-won't-they, and then go out with a literal bang.

Well, you're not wrong.

It's a danger not just in fanfic, but other media too. After the how-will-they get-together intrigue, it can be difficult to find a new balance that makes the relationship still part of the story.

It's why many tv shows have the couple break up or be separated after less than a season.

I love the design of this secret. It looks like the dust jacket of a novel published 50 years ago.

I thought the same thing! It's a very pretty secret.

I agree! Well done on the secret design, OP.
