At his best, Vlad was so much more complex than a guy trying to get his college sweetheart. At his best he was cunning, clever and incredibly manipulative, and his goals went beyond Maddie.

He was a guy who wanted to use his powers to give himself everything he wanted in life. Power in the ghost zone (with the whole Fright Knight plot that regrettably got dropped), wealth, as well as the perfect family (not just Maddie but also Danny. A person who was like him who he could mentor and mold.). He's a villain in means but he does what a lot of people would want to do if they suddenly gained superpowers. Get what they want in life.

And he's good at it. So I don't think it's insulting to compare him to Xanatos.

I didn't know David Xanatos was on Danny Phantom.

I like each villain you namedropped pretty equally, but none of them have very much in common with one another beyond the whole "rich villain" trope, but lets be honest, that's like every other villain ever.

My impression, and I might be wrong, was that Vlad was supposed to be a villain who thinks he's Xanatos-like. He thinks he's a genius, but he can be outsmarted by people with much less experience; he thinks he's charming and charismatic, but the woman he loves will never be happy with him; and he gained his wealth not by being a good businessman, but by possessing his competitors and making them sabotage themselves.

Ah, well then Van Kleiss kind of breaks the mold there doesn't he, in terms of a pattern? He is a genius, he's extremely wealthy, he doesn't care about love (in the comics he has a short fling with a female villain, and ends up turning her into a statue out of some form of misguided "you're more beautiful in my garden anyway" deal), and he's always portrayed as a legitimate threat, never really getting subverted with comedy or anything. On top of it all, he's charming and charismatic enough that half the world is willing to turn the other cheek with regards to his practices.
