Do you like fanfic or fanart more?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-18 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
And which do you think takes more skill to be good at?

Neither is better than the other. I generally personally prefer fics, but I love good fanart too (although my tolerance for bad fanart is lower than my tolerance for bad fanfic).

And both take equal skill. For both, there is a range from bad to good to excellent. I think the best of both have equal talent.

I like fic more but fanart is much easier to sift through to find the good stuff.

And yeah, I'd agree they take equal skill.

Fic more. I thinking comparing which requires more skill is like comparing apples to oranges.

Fic fic fic fic fic fic fic fic fic fic.

Fanart, I just look at it and I think "Oh, that's nice" and I move on.

The same is not true of fic.

And which do you think takes more skill to be good at?

Don't know. Don't know that one has to be easier.

Art a bit more than fic.

The two might take about the same amount of skill, but I think most people have the writing basics down since it's pretty much required to participate in society, so they have a head start compared to artists who have to seek out and learn the fundamentals on their own.

I like fanart more since I'm really visual. Fanfic's never really appealed to me, especially since it's mostly ship stuff.

I seek out and read fanfic more often than I do fanart. I mainly just don't think to go looking for fanart a lot of the time, don't really know why.

But when I do come across fanart I enjoy it as much as I do fanfic, and I share others' sentiment that both activities involve a lot of talent and skill. Fans can be quite impressive with their creativity :).

Depends on my mood and what I'm after. They're both equal in worth.

Art is nice but the average fanart tends to be one snapshot of one scene and lacks the emotional depth of the average fic.

Not that fanart can't be in depth and emotional and plotty in the form of comics or several related arts, but the limitations of the media minimize the depth at which I'm drawn into the fanwork.

I like fanart, because I produce fic. I'm only moderately good at art.

As a person who has done both for quite a while, I'd say neither is easier. They both require a lot of effort and practice to hone the skills needed to be really good at either one.

I don't have a preference, really. I don't think one is harder than the other, either, and I've never understood people who believe fanfic is easier. Writing crappy fanfic is easy, sure. But so is making crappy fanart.

I like both, wish I were better at both, and find them equally difficult really.

I like fic more, I guess. I adore fanart, I absolutely adore it and I probably like more of it, but it doesn't give the same kick that a good fic does. And I'm saying this as someone who does both.

idk about skill though. I think it depends on the person.

A like fic better, and I think that although they require a different set of skills, to create a good fanfic (or art) it's needed as much skill as for a good fanart (or fic).

Re: Do you like fanfic or fanart more?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Fic, because the enjoyment I get out of it lasts longer.

I like both. But as a non-artist, I think it takes a little more skill to be good at producing fanart.

I prefer fic.

They both take different skills.

I prefer fic and I think that fan art's more difficult as some people can't draw like at all.

Art. I can often* find art that scratches whatever itch I want scratched at a particular time but rarely find fic that suits me.

* But not anywhere near always... I seem to latch on to unpopular characters an awful lot. v_v

(Edit - and as to the second question, they both take huge amounts of work and skill to do well, and I'm not really willing to try to quantify and compare.)

I like art more for the following reasons:

1- I like doing art myself
2-Reading fanfiction requires me to stop everything else and concentrate on reading it, I can't ever shake the feeling that I should be doing something else instead, even if I don't think fanfiction's a waste of time

Different people are good at different things, so the debate of whether one is more difficult than the other doesn't make much sense. Art is more expensive though.

Both take equal skill, just in different ways.

I put more energy into looking for fanfic. Fanart I spend less time exploring.

I like both equally. Although, I do think it takes more skill to draw a decent picture than it takes to write a decent story.

Like, for example, you have Generic Hot Guy. It's a lot easier to describe how his muscles ripple or his hair shines with words. Now, when you have to apply all the technical things drawing comes with (anatomy, color, shading, lighting, perspective, etc.) that takes a bit more skill to pull off properly.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE drawing and writing, and writing does take some skill to pull of decently, it just that drawing takes a little more skill.

Fic more in general because you get to spend more time with it.

But art when it comes to humor. Visual comedy works so much better for me than written comedy.

I like fanfic a bit more than fanart, because I like the time it occupies me. Art can be looked at for a moment then one moves on, fic, one has to sit and read.

I really don't think the skills needed are really comparable. They work in different ways, with writing a mental skill and drawing more a motor skill. I appreciate someone who can create a beautiful picture and I appreciate someone who can put words and plot ideas together in a good story.
