(Anonymous) 2015-12-20 02:34 am (UTC)(link)Overall, I'd agree, but there were some really odd shooting choices for some of the action sequences. (I was a film student for a while, so I'm probably more sensitive to a lot of these nuances.)
I loved the use of force powers this time, and the lightsaber fight. The action worked for me on every level.
The only part I can't buy outright is the shot getting stuck in midair. It's vibrating and humming, not caught in stasis (which is the Star Wars video game power that's most similar to that) - stasis is a cessation of movement, almost to the point of a time-stop. That... wasn't. All the rest, including the mind-reading, I was totally okay with, because there's precedent, even if non-canon (Kreia), and it's a logical extension to "stretch out with your feelings" anyway.
No, I totally heard it too, at least once or twice. I'm almost certain it was in a scene where Rey was running away from Kylo Ren (maybe during the lightsaber duel?).
I heard it every time Kylo Ren was messing with someone's mind, for sure. Lightsaber duel - maybe? It wasn't quite Vader's breathing, but it was something that was clearly designed to be strongly reminiscent. Good to hear I'm not the only one who heard it, though! The three people I was with didn't.
That's an excellent point and you're probably right, which is why I wish I remembered more of that scene...
She thought of an ocean, and an island. Exactly how long has Luke been hiding out there? Probably long enough... While she could be Leia's kid instead, and just picking things up due to Force-sensitivity in general rather than blood ties, I don't think she's supposed to be Jaina specifically. She just has a lot of the same general traits, so I think she was inspired by Jaina.
I didn't hate that shot, but it was an odd place to end the movie on. I would've liked to seen this as well.
After the first couple of back-and-forth shots, I was totally expecting Luke's hand to extend and him to call the lightsaber. Drop the helicopter shot (it wasn't terrible, but it didn't mesh well with the rest of the editing at that point), and just track the saber falling into his hand - and credits. I suspect we'll be revisiting these few shots, though.
Also, I liked the "path of a thousand steps" on the island; it felt very East Asian-influenced, and that ties back beautifully to the Jedi as being essentially a mix of Zen monks and samurai.
Re: More specific spoilers!
Welp, I am certainly not that, so I'll take you at your word!

I wasn't sure what was going on there either, but I didn't hate it; just figured some new powers were being introduced, or old ones (I thought of stasis, too!) were being tweaked.

Yea, it did sound like an altered version of Vader's breathing below the music to me. I didn't remember when exactly it occurred, but I'll have to pay more attention next time during the interrogation scenes. Overall the music didn't wow me as much as I expected, but there were some nice additions and the sound effects were amazing.

Maybe! That would make sense. I could buy that she was Leia and Han's kid (why wouldn't you tell her though, Leia?! Well, I guess after the disaster that was Ben she could have had conflicted feelings...) or that she's Luke's kid. She could even be someone else, but given Star Wars history I think it's likely she's related to the mains and Luke seems the more obvious choice, what with all the parallels.
and just track the saber falling into his hand - and credits.
That's exactly what I thought was going to happen, but I guess JJ wanted to end the film on a question mark; wanted people to speculate as to how Luke will greet Rey, and if he's even willing to train Jedi again. I definitely agree that we'll come back to this scene at the first of the next movie, though.

It was GORGEOUS. Such a cool moment.
