I was a film student for a while, so I'm probably more sensitive to a lot of these nuances.

Welp, I am certainly not that, so I'll take you at your word!

The only part I can't buy outright is the shot getting stuck in midair.

I wasn't sure what was going on there either, but I didn't hate it; just figured some new powers were being introduced, or old ones (I thought of stasis, too!) were being tweaked.

It wasn't quite Vader's breathing, but it was something that was clearly designed to be strongly reminiscent.

Yea, it did sound like an altered version of Vader's breathing below the music to me. I didn't remember when exactly it occurred, but I'll have to pay more attention next time during the interrogation scenes. Overall the music didn't wow me as much as I expected, but there were some nice additions and the sound effects were amazing.

She just has a lot of the same general traits, so I think she was inspired by Jaina.

Maybe! That would make sense. I could buy that she was Leia and Han's kid (why wouldn't you tell her though, Leia?! Well, I guess after the disaster that was Ben she could have had conflicted feelings...) or that she's Luke's kid. She could even be someone else, but given Star Wars history I think it's likely she's related to the mains and Luke seems the more obvious choice, what with all the parallels.

and just track the saber falling into his hand - and credits.

That's exactly what I thought was going to happen, but I guess JJ wanted to end the film on a question mark; wanted people to speculate as to how Luke will greet Rey, and if he's even willing to train Jedi again. I definitely agree that we'll come back to this scene at the first of the next movie, though.

Also, I liked the "path of a thousand steps" on the island

It was GORGEOUS. Such a cool moment.
