Totally understandable OP, though I'd suggest looking out for sales (which I'm sure you already do) or playing older games. (If you can find them and if they're more affordable.)

For really old games there are emulators, and if you're interested in a game but don't have the cash or console you could always just watch a let's play. Not the same, I know, but it's better than not seeing it or experiencing it at all. (Plus...you could always play it later? Might ruin the 'surprise', but if the game is enjoyable then it'll probably be worth it.)
