I've asked the exact same question before, and I assume they're looking for a way to bookmark it for later that isn't public. Or that they're hoping against hope that maybe the author will decide to make it a multi-chapter fic, and that part I don't get, because it just seems silly to hope.

Yes. It is very silly to hope. If the author doesn't fic what's broken-ended, you'll go insane.
