Why do...

(Anonymous) 2015-12-21 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Why do people 'follow' stories on ff.net THAT ARE COMPLETED AND CLEARLY MARKED COMPLETED?

There's never gonna be another notification. It's done. Credits rolled. It's over. Bookmark it, love it, favorite it, please, god, leave a comment. And hey, it's okay if you follow it... but why?

Is it a bookmarking thing?

Is it a derp thing?

It's so minor but I crave knowing why.

Maybe for some reason, they don't want to put it in their favorite list, because it is public and all, but want to find it again later?

(the same has happened to me before and I've always figured that's the case)

That could make sense, yeah.

1.) A lot of the time, the notifications were put in place when the story was a WIP.

2.) Why take another step to remove notifications once they are in place? If there's never another one, who cares if it's still there? What does it hurt?

3.) Yes, it's also a form of bookmarking.

for 1 & 2, I always get this for one shots. There is no WIP; just a mess of Follows for completed stories.

But 3 does make sense, so.

Believe me, the way I typed it makes it sound like judgement, but mostly it was just an honest question. I take tools literally.

I've asked the exact same question before, and I assume they're looking for a way to bookmark it for later that isn't public. Or that they're hoping against hope that maybe the author will decide to make it a multi-chapter fic, and that part I don't get, because it just seems silly to hope.

Yes. It is very silly to hope. If the author doesn't fic what's broken-ended, you'll go insane.

Maybe they have the habit from fandoms/times where the authors would announce sequels or other new stories by adding a new chapter to their currently popular finished work. (Which is against ff.net's rules, but eh)

In addition to the reasons mentioned up thread, some people also use it as a private to-read list.

I think my brother uses it as a form of bookmark, I'm not sure about that, I only saw the inside of his FFN account once, but he did have an extensive alerts list. He also keeps an extensive favourites list, but then so do I.

I know I probably have dozens of dead alerts for finished fics. The only time I do go and remove some is when a still-updating fic I have stopped reading updates and I actually do something about not getting the alerts anymore.
