I think my brother uses it as a form of bookmark, I'm not sure about that, I only saw the inside of his FFN account once, but he did have an extensive alerts list. He also keeps an extensive favourites list, but then so do I.

I know I probably have dozens of dead alerts for finished fics. The only time I do go and remove some is when a still-updating fic I have stopped reading updates and I actually do something about not getting the alerts anymore.
