I also wonder if fanfic might be the best stuff I'll write, despite actually having written stuff that got published (and in one case, won second place in a contest).

In an case, I think my fanfic might have brought people more joy.

Would it be possible to try and erase the fandom connections from the piece and rework it as a piece of original fiction? I hear that's all the rage in writing circles nowadays. Seriously though, you should see if you can do that, or at least take parts of it and use them in original fic if you really think this piece represents the apex of your skills.

My suggestion would be to maybe examine the parts of the fic that OP feels are the best examples of their writing and see if it's something in the style, or perhaps the type of story (police work) that they can use in original fiction rather than just lifting directly.

Even if it is their own work, there can (and has been) backlash about using all or even parts of ones own fanfiction and filing off the serial numbers in order to turn it into original fiction.

I think it might have to do with quality, though. Some of the most famous examples are Cassandra Claire - who had massive drama surrounding her and plagiarism accusations and whatnot, and FSoG which is terrible all around.
If you write a decent story and do a decent job of reworking the characters into something new, people might be more forgiving.

Tinypic has an issue with not being able to tell just how big your secret is by looking at the main page, one of the main reasons why it's not a good image hosting site. If you're determined to use it anyway, try right-clicking on the image and choosing to open it up in another tab so you can see the real size: http://oi63.tinypic.com/fookth.jpg

Actually, you might want to submit that link instead, so people don't have to look at ads.

I know that fear. Sometimes I worry that all of my best ideas are as fanfic - as in, me responding to an extant work and reshaping it, rather than truly original.
Even scarier is that out of my original ideas - one was born as a parody that I reshaped, several are based on dreams, and one is a fanfic I'm filing the serial numbers off of. I feel profoundly unoriginal.
