" texting/calling people."

This could be done with a conventional phone or a non-smart phone.

"emailing"

Computer.

"taking picture"

Camera.

"finding directions"

Map, human being, GPS, or computer.

"track of appointments, lists"

Paper.

"playing, like, thousands of games"

Most of them are not good. NDS would serve you better.

Basically, they do many things--but none of them as well as other, more narrowly-focused devices.

Okay, so... you'll... lug a computer, camera, datebook, GPS, map and NDS around all at once? Awesome, you're stronger than you are smart.

Smartphones let you do all that in a device the size of your hand. No, it's not ideal compared to a proper desktop or laptop, but it's far more convenient.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well, not half-assed. I don't need the datebook (I've never had trouble remembering appointments), the GPS, the map, or the NDS.

A computer, a camera, and a flip-phone are enough. You don't need to be especially strong to carry all that; there are lightweight laptops, though personally I prefer to take a gaming laptop (one reason I don't need the NDS).

I got a smartphone last year and I use it strictly for texting and internet use. I can't be carrying a laptop with me all the time. And sometimes I see something I want to take a picture of but didn't think to bring a camera.

I guess in Blitzyland that makes me fucking stupid, but whatever, at least I don't look like an idiot lugging a bunch of stuff around.

I don't think you're stupid, nonny. You just have different preferences/tastes than I do, nothing wrong with that.

That's refreshing coming from Miss "I'm Smarter Than Everyone." I guess you really ARE better than Dethtoll.

AFAIK you haven't gotten anyone to kill themselves either.

Forgive me if I don't take that as a ringing endorsement lol.

And I don't think I'm smarter than everyone. I think I'm smarter than most people in a very few specific areas, and less able/smart than almost everyone at almost everything else.

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't meant to be a ringing endorsement. You're still kind of a terrible person.

Kind of? You know what Jesus says about lukewarm people, nonny. You must be decisive!

dethtoll hasn't gotten anyone to kill themselves either. That's a rumor that was spread by a person who backtracked when they were asked to give back up and kept on repeating it so people would believe it's true.

and no, I'm not dethtoll. So if you're going to come up with an argument it should be better than the weak cop out "well you must be dethtoll saying this."

Well, I know Deaftool has his groupies, so you must be one of them.

I know he's bragged about raping and murdering someone. It's probably not true, but that he'd even joke about it is disgusting.

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe people just don't believe your claims that he did this and that awful thing anymore because you claim it all the time and hardly have anything to back it up.

You know the story about the boy who cried wolf yeah?

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
That's all true, but most of those things are too big/bulky to carry around with you on the go. Either way, something else being just as (or more) useful as a smart phone doesn't change that it's still useful! It's just a matter of deciding if the convenience of having all of those features in a relatively small package is worth the price, I think? For some people it's not, and I can totally understand that.

I have kind of come around to smartphones, but overall I agree with you. I hate how short their lifespan is, exactly because of all these things.
My ideal smartphone would be one that does calling/texting/whatsapp and such, capable of housing my translator apps (though tbh I'd give up my phone translator and buy a manual one of smartphones weren't so goshdarn expensive), mp3 ringtones, maps (because the few times I've needed them, they did save me, even though I still prefer to check ahead of time and not use my phone for it), and I guess it's kind of nice having a camera around and being able to share pictures easily.

I usually take my laptop places with me anyway, and it's a million times more convenient for using the internet.

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
But they do all those things. And in one device. It's fine to prefer the other devices, but it's literally the opposite of true to say smartphones are useless.

That's like saying a coffee can performs the same use as a toilet because you can shit in either one--almost no one would consider a coffee can an adequate replacement for a working toilet.

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
....what?

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
This is why everyone thinks you're stupid and probably an aspie. Nothing about this analogy makes sense or has anything to do with smartphones.

Re: Popular things you hate.

[personal profile] blitzwing 2015-12-22 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
A coffee can could serve the same purpose as a toilet--much like a smartphone can serve the same purpose a map or a laptop would. Neither the coffee can nor the smartphone are true replacements for the toilet or the laptop.

Does that make sense now?

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
No, because that's stupid. A smartphone isn't anything more than a tiny handheld computer. It's perfectly serviceable as a map device. You just can't use one right, because you're a moron.

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
buddy you're trying too hard

it's totally fine to not like smartphones!!!!! to each his own!!! but like. the answer's right there in what you said. "Almost no one would consider a coffee can an adequate replacement for a working toilet." TRUE: which is why it's a terrible analogy. A LOT of people consider smartphones very adequate for the tasks you listed.

tl;dr JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE A THING DOESN'T MEAN IT DOESN'T DO THE THING IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO

My personal phone is a dumb phone, but I was issued a smart phone at work and it is indispensible. I do a lot of travel/fieldwork for my job - and not fancy travel in airports, but me in an suv in the middle of nowhere kind of travel. It would make things really hard if I had to go all day without email and I couldn't get anything done if I were tied to a hotel room always! Obviously, people got along without it before, but tgat made things take longer and cost more.
