I tend to get a bit glum at this time of year, and love a good wallow in a sad song.

For me, it’s Elephant by Jason Isbell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHJhyrrUTgc). The least sentimental song about cancer ever written, but it never fails to make my eyes sting.

'Pretty Things' by Gretchen Peters, 'Come To Jesus' by Mindy Smith, and 'Me And Little Andy' by Dolly Parton.

Probably any rendition of Forever Love being sung by Toshi (X-Japan). With the context of this song having been written by their late ex-guitarist, there's pretty much no way I can listen to this song without being a depressive baby about it. Especially when it's sung live.

Telephone Wire and Edges of the World from Fun Home.

Neutral Milk Hotel's "3 Peaches" tears my heart out, even more so now than when the album came out, because the girl he wrote it about did in fact kill herself years later.

Tom Waits has some rough ones -- the entire album Alice kills me, the songs "Pony," "Georgia Lee," "On the Nickel," "Soldiers Things," "Shiny Things," "Green Grass," lots others that aren't coming to me right now...

I'll probably come back to this thread later, because God knows I have listened to a lot of desolate music in my time, but my mind is a blank right now.

I think I'll pass on "Elephant" -- sounds worse than The Verve's "The Drugs Don't Work" and I can't make it through that song, either. My mom died of cancer, and that's just a no.

My mom used to sing me this song in Spanish about two little lizards who had lost their wedding rings and were weeping over them, and that song would always make me cry. Does that sound familiar to anyone? I want to say it was based on a short story...?

Oh, how could I have forgotten the king of gloomy songs, Jason Molina. Made even sadder by his unexpected death a couple of years ago too.

I find it impossible to listen to his song Blue Factory Flame (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CG6gpwYH1DM) without feeling utter despair. I think it's depression made into sound.

Is it weird though that I find it oddly...enjoyable? Or maybe cathartic.

It's a cover and I I'm not sure I've heard the whole of the original. However it was a big factor in a depressive period I had a couple of months ago so I am still very much in the "I can't listen to this" phase.

"Passage" by Vienna Teng. It's about a woman who died in a carcrash and whose ghost keeps watching the reactions of the people she knew until they finally move on. It's heartbreaking (and hauntingly pretty). I'm also not usually paranoid or supersticious, but I don't want to listen to that song while driving.

I'll be Home for Christmas.

Especially sadder since that was my late sister's favorite Christmas song.
