Myra Breckinridge was pretty bad. I kept asking myself why I was still reading it.

I heard the movie's even worse. I did not see it.

'Song of the South' My mom found an old copy in the library, had fond memories, and showed it to me.

Thanks for the awkward, Disney.

Most of the dragon age games because of their treatment of women and lesbians, but particularly inquisition because of the shitty treatment of trans-men and the complete lack of trans-women.

The trans man isn't even good trans representation, because he's white.

^ A real opinion from Tumblr, everyone.

Here we go. One of those people who thinks that games are about representation.

If friggin' Dragon Age is THE most offensive piece of media you've ever come across, you clearly haven't consumed much media at all.

My first instinct was to say Gayniggers from Outer Space, but on second thought I'm going to go with Kate Breslin's For Such a Time.

At the very least, Gayniggers from Outer Space is intentionally offensive and clearly intended to be a parody (though I personally did not find it funny).

For Such a Time, on the other hand, is 100% serious, and the author doesn't understand why it's offensive no matter how many times people try to explain it to her. She is so painfully clueless I'd almost feel sorry for her if I wasn't so disgusted.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't read that but now I'm intrigued. Can you elaborate on what makes For Such a Time so offensive?

Excluding things that are extremely dated, and edgy intentionally offensive things: probably a book called Sloppy Firsts and its sequel Second Helpings. It's always hailed as "feminist," but the main character spends most of the book calling other girls bitches and sluts. And not as a character flaw. The other girls are such awful stereotypes that it's like you're being forced to agree with her.

I read the whole series a looooooooong time ago. I think there were five books and I only remember three things: the MC fixation on the fact that she has the same name as a porn star, the fact that she goes a year without getting her period and gets it on the night she decides not to sleep with her boyfriend, and the boyfriend waving his junk in her face while she sleeps.

The imperialist/colonialist subtext, you mean? My kid self didn't pick up on that stuff either. For years I thought it was just a show about cute elephants. :(

I didn't pick up on it either, as a kid I thought it was a nice show about adoption but as an adult eeeeh more stolen generation-esque.

Gay snuff S&M comics. That was a weird relationship.

I mean, if we're talking semi-mainstream release, it's hard to beat Meet the Feebles, although early John Waters probably did shock cinema better than anyone.

Some of the things I have actually read:

Firefly by Piers Anthony. http://hradzka.livejournal.com/392471.html

The Fifth Sorceress by Robert Newcomb: http://www.sfreviews.net/5thsorceress.html

Power of Persuasion: a Buffy the Vampire Slayer tie-in novel (!) where the villains are evil feminists who like to reverse gender roles and melt men's brains. It's weirdly clever at points (the only way to kill the goddess of memory is to create a situation where she isn't thinking about herself), which only makes the rest of it so much uncomfortable.

The Big Bang Theory. The first two and a half seasons are cute, but still flawed. The remainder is filled with the worst, most unhealthy messages about life and relationships that I've ever seen. It's hateful and awful.
