Re: The most offensive piece of media you've ever come across.

My first instinct was to say Gayniggers from Outer Space, but on second thought I'm going to go with Kate Breslin's For Such a Time.

At the very least, Gayniggers from Outer Space is intentionally offensive and clearly intended to be a parody (though I personally did not find it funny).

For Such a Time, on the other hand, is 100% serious, and the author doesn't understand why it's offensive no matter how many times people try to explain it to her. She is so painfully clueless I'd almost feel sorry for her if I wasn't so disgusted.

Haven't read that but now I'm intrigued. Can you elaborate on what makes For Such a Time so offensive?

AYRT

It's Nazi-romanticizing Christian propaganda disguised as a "modern" adaptation of the Book of Esther. Basically, a Jewish woman who looks "Aryan" enough to hide her Jewishness falls in love with a guy who runs a concentration camp, and then she finds salvation through Jesus.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of why this book is terrible:

And an example of the author's painful cluelessness in action:

Not only offensive, that summary sounds fucking drippy and lame

Well, it is an inspirational romance. That's a genre that has drippiness as one of its main tenets. I don't mind that such books exists as long as no one's forcing me to read them, but I must object to the slaughter of millions of people being used as a backdrop for a drippy romance. And I especially object to the Holocaust being used as a backdrop for a fucking "JEW SEES THE LIGHT AND BECOMES CHRISTIAN!!!!" story, which would be offensive in and of itself even without the bonus Nazis.

Not to mention that just converting to Christianity would probably not have been of any use to a Jewish person during this time.

Wowwww

That's just entirely ...nope. Nopenopenopenope.

How can you not understand why that's offensive?

NAYRT - I know nothing about her, but it wouldn't surprise me if she were one of those incredibly sheltered Christians who've never done or seen much outside church and have a very narrow view of the world.

WTF. That book was nominated for TWO RITA Awards?! WTF?!

At least it didn't win.

Ugh, that book. You can't really reason with that kind of person, though. People who are that Christian would never see finding Jesus as a bad thing, no matter what the context, so of course they're puzzled as to why anyone would be offended.
