I just...what is the risk here though? The worst that can happen is you won't be immediately invested.

Personally I always found it an adventure to get antiquated with a new set of characters. I can't imagine why someone would find that a bad thing.

I love the feeling of adventure when you sink into a good book with good characters and it's a journey of discovery.
Sadly, I haven't found anything recently that really *transported* me, but still. When it happens it's great :'D

If you read non fiction you might be confronted with a world view different from your own. Your worldview could be challenged. An awful lot of people are frightened of that because they have to leave their comfort zone.
