Or you know, you could let people read whatever makes them happy. Could try that for a change. See how that goes.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think OP is stopping or trying to stop anyone from reading something. They're just venting about a reason some people give for reading something.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
People can read whatever makes them happy. OP isn't required to have a good opinion of them, though, just like you aren't required to have a good opinion about, well, anyone.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well... Are they only reading fic of visual media? Maybe what they really mean is that they just like to know exactly what the characters look like?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I cannot wrap my head around anybody saying this. It is possibly one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard a fair number of people say things like this. Other claims to why fanfic is 100% superior to any other form of media are:
- fanfic is better written
- fanfic has more creative plotlines
- fanfic is more diverse and deals with complex issues

It's indicative of a larger problem, the extreme risk aversion being demonstrated across college campuses and on youth oriented websites. Bunch of fraidy cats coming up the ranks.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, but it's a pretty common reasoning when people are arguing over why fanfic is better than published fiction.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, people say this? Where? Also, why? Also, who do I talk to about shutting down the internet forever?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for fuck's sake. Just because some people nowadays are idiots doesn't mean the answer is to shut down the internet for ever for everyone.

That's stupidly overreacting.

I have honestly not heard the "risk" argument before.

For most people i know it's that they already love the characters and want to have more on them when canon is limited. Or liking tropes/pairing unavailable in canon.

For some people it might even be laziness to just go for something familiar - but risk? Never heard someone say that.

Same, don't think I've ever heard this before. Most people in fandom seem to just want to read more about characters they adore, or a universe they're intrigued in, etc.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be like the lit fic snobs telling people what they "should" like & read. Don't you have things you go for to escape RL & find comfort? If not, why are you on this site?

While I may not agree with the idea of only reading fanfic and nothing else(although I've never seen anyone say this) other people can read what they want, it's not like it will ever affect me.

"EVERYTHING IS A RISK"

oh lol I guess I sort of agree, but the way this whole secret reads makes it sound like it's a more important issue than it really is. Are you sure you're only just beginning to see why everyone makes fun of fandom :')

[personal profile] ketita 2015-12-24 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I kind of agree. I don't go around policing anybody's reading habits, but I do find it weird when people claim they only ever read fanfiction, if only because if you don't read anything original, how do you find canons to read fanfic about, like you said....
I think a diet of constant fanfiction really does limit your horizons.

Um

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
If people actually say that, then it is a stupid thing to say - mostly because it makes reading sound like more of a risk than watching a show or movie. However, people don't have to make themselves uncomfortable for something they do for fun, nor should you expect them to.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I just...what is the risk here though? The worst that can happen is you won't be immediately invested.

Personally I always found it an adventure to get antiquated with a new set of characters. I can't imagine why someone would find that a bad thing.

Just let people read what they want to read, sheesh. If they don't want to broaden their world by reading original novels, then that's their choice and their problem, not yours.

But I do agree with the ridiculous trigger warning stuff.

I'm not a big reader. I consume visual mediums. And if I like them enough I seek out fanworks which sometimes includes fanfic. But fanfic's a lot easier to consume and process for me, I already know what the world's suppose to look like so I don't have to build it in my head. Fanfic's shorter. It rarely has set up. It's not at all like reading a book to me.

It feels like something someone would say because they've been made to feel defensive about liking a thing and think they have to justify themselves. Which they don't. If people genuinely like to read at all I doubt there's too many people who only absolutely read one type of reading material. What they don't read books if they're in school or uni, don't read the paper, other stuff on the internet not connected to fandom?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't know this was a thing. Wow. That sounds really stupid. But, whatever. Their loss I suppose. Books > fanfiction, period.

I read fanfic because I hate that real fic is so limited

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
My problem with pro fic is: even in the unlikely event I wade through dross to find good pro fic, I then have to wait a year and a half for the unlikely event the author will continue the series. If they even do. And maybe total there will be 3 books in the series?

With fanfic about a TV show I love, I can read hundreds if not more of stories about characters I adore.

So, OP, maybe you're justified in saying I'm a special snowflake in that I like to read more than a couple of books a year without wading through a bunch of stuff that isn't that enjoyable. So what? I don't have that much time to waste, frankly. I work 10-12 hours a day. The time I do have I want to spend relaxing with something I enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
I only read fanfic because I don't really give enough of a shit to read anything else, oh well
