Image: E.T. and Elliott ride a bycicle through the air, silloutted in front of the moon, from the movie E. T.: The Extra Terrestrial

I have an irrational dislike of this movie stemming from the fact that I really, really HATE Reese's Pieces. I still think it's a good movie, a seminal film for 80s kids, blah blah blah, but still... E. T. and Elliott have terrible taste in candy.

Rees's Pieces don't even taste like proper peanut butter: too sweet and not the right texture.

I love peanut butter cups, though. The chocolate makes all the difference - especially dark chocolate.

I heard somewhere they originally wanted to use M&Ms but Mars wouldn't pay for the product placement. THat makes things a little better.

I get that, but that may be just me being all weird and foreign. American peanut butter is so sickly sweet.

Peanuts aren't sweet. Peanut butter shouldn't be either.

It's that good old American high fructose corn syrup that gets added into almost everything, whether Americans want it or not!

You've probably only had it in candy. It's sweet because it's candy. We also have peanut butter that's not sweetened.

By that reasoning, we shouldn't have chocolate because cacao pods aren't sweet, either. Neither are vanilla beans.

Peanut butter isn't sweet though...? You sure you had actual peanut butter and not candy?

The best peanut butter is the one with peanut pieces in it, not the creamy kind.

American natural peanut butter and freshly-roasted peanut butter aren't sweet.

Agreed about both Reese's products. The pieces have a weird mayonnaise-y aftertaste and they gross me out if I eat them.

Also, wanting to stab anyone who calls them REESEES PEESEES has probably contributed partly to my dislike of the product.

This is...one of the most random secrets we've had in a while, but because of that I appreciate it. I don't exactly understand your irrational dislike of E.T. or your pure hatred of Reese's Pieces (though I don't like them either; you're right, they don't taste much like peanut butter), but, hey.

I imagine we all irrationally dislike something.

Okay.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-25 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate Reese's Pieces, though I can't eat them as I'm actually allergic to something in them, but I will agree that they aren't all that peanut buttery and that the cups are far superior (though it's original milk chocolate for me, then white chocolate, then dark chocolate). Maybe you could pretend they're M&Ms?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-25 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The reasons you hate pieces is why I like them lol.

OH MAN. I love Reese's Pieces. Om nom nom.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-25 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I find that most American lollies taste weird to me. I think it's something to do with the chocolate - it's always waxy and flavourless. I like the IDEA of peanut butter cups, but in practice they taste pretty gross. But then non-Australians think Vegemite is gross, so I guess it's all a matter of what you're used to.

Yeah, I remember watching ET and wondering why the Smarties looked so weird!

Vegemite/Marmite is definitely our acquired taste.

Some better candy shops will have "homemade" (non-factory produced) peanut butter cups. They are AMAZING. I remember eating one with dark chocolate and the peanut butter was *oozing* out of the chocolate--words fail me...

the cups are my love

the pieces...if I can recall correctly, they have a weird fake coating of a texture? blegh. the taste itself is super fake too. plastic!

(Anonymous) 2015-12-25 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, Reese's Pieces *aren't* the peanut butter cups?

I also dislike this movie but for different reasons. I also dislike Reese's products.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP. Reese's Pieces suck. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yuck. I hate reeses pieces too. The cups are great, but the pieces are disgusting.

I just pretend they were skittles or M&M's instead.

The chocolate in peanut butter cups is the worst.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I hate how burnt Reese's Peanut Butter Cups taste. I'd rather dip a Dove Promise into some peanut butter and eat it that way.
