Nice use of the blue box!

Isn't it word of god that they had sex in this scene? If so, then yeah, outside of the hot tub scene at the Honeybee he probably didn't have any prior experience.

That said, I never saw this scene as being sexual until Nomura or whoever said it was, and I still can't really see it in the OG. Cloud's a fucking mess and outside of a handful of early optional lines shows no interest in Tifa (or Aeris) at all. And even those lines come across less as Cloud expressing interest, and more as Zack's charm temporarily overriding Cloud's snarky jackassery. At best it'd be like Tifa trying to put the moves on a sack of potatoes.

I literally can't see them having sex in that scene, casually spoken word of god or not, and I wish people would prioritize the game itself over what a developer said as an aside. I mean, I'm totally down for believing that both Tifa and Cloud are huuuuuge fucking virgins (especially Cloud) but they're both too shy and messed up and emotionally passive for me to see that scene as sexual....idk. I see Tifa waiting around forever for Cloud to make a move while he obliviously gazes into the distance.

ia. People can headcanon whatever they want, but I don't see it.

Oblivious is definitely the right word for Cloud. I think it's telling that even Aeris, who comes across very sexually confident, puts on the brakes when it comes to flirting with Cloud past their initial interaction. And when she does try teasing him it goes totally over his head. Their date is her essentially telling Cloud "I might be into you if you weren't a maniac who stole my dead boyfriend's personality."

It's not exactly word of god. One of the creators joked that they were originally going to be implied to have had sex on the Highwind, but that was taken out for being too tasteless. You could take it to mean that the creators still had sex in mind during this scene... but as the scene exists, it's only semi-romantic if Cloud has high affection with Tifa, and even then, you literally don't see anything happen. Honestly, it's not even "romantic" per se, it's them having a heart to heart and there's actually no clear affirmation of romantic interest. It's pretty vague, as are all the romance scenes in the game.

I agree with your interpretation though. Though I don't think it was Zack's charm - I don't think Cloud "absorbed" Zack's personality so much as simply thought he did the stuff Zack did, and gained a lot of confidence (and subsequently, snarky charm) for it. I don't think the game is clear at all about Cloud returning romantic feelings for Aeris or Tifa, even if you get their affection ratings as high as possible. There's not even a kiss or anything of the sort.

If anything, I don't think Cloud got into a serious relationship until after the game, and then (going into Advent Children territory) that got messed up due him developing geostigma and still mourning Aeris (who, despite affection rating, he did have an attachment to).
