You're really, really upset because I suggested that Christmas might have taken on a secular meaning (themes of family, friendship, homecoming, goodwill, none of which are married to religious concepts) outside of its origins in Pagan and later Christian traditions and indeed apart from the entirely unreligious commercialization by corporate interests dating back to the beginning of the industrial age, and that secular nature has made it easier for many Jews (who might even still celebrate Hanukkah with their families) to celebrate Christmas as a secular holiday. That really seems to offend you on a personal level, so you're posting multiple-paragraph whines at me to show how offended you are.

I'm sorry people were meanies to you (and you're certainly allowed to celebrate whatever you want, I personally don't like Christmas either) but it doesn't mean I'm wrong.

So, let me get this straight: me suggesting that Christmas is widely considered to be a secular holiday and stating that some Jews celebrate it as such = telling you that you personally as an individual should be celebrating Christmas why don't you fucking celebrate Christmas you weirdo? So why use this thread as a springboard to scream at me for suggesting that a holiday might have secular connotations when you could be better spending your time shaming other Jews for celebrating Christmas? After all, they're clearly the weird ones.

I never said it didn't have religious connotations. What I said was that it has secular connotations separate from pre-existing religious connotations. You can choose to focus on those religious ties. Most people don't, and you don't get to tell them they are. You sound a whole hell of a lot like Thanksgiving Anon actually.

psst, anon. holidays aren't an independently existing entity. they aren't some kind of being with rules and qualifications. they are literally only what people make of them. people have been celebrating "winter solstice" type holidays for thousands of years. It's a great time for festivities, because winter sucks. You're the one with selective association here - it does not belong to the Christians. Especially not today when so many non-Christians celebrate it. hell, I lived in Japan for several years, it's a super popular holiday there but almost no one is Christian there. Gift-giving, decorations, feasting - none of that is Christian. If you want to make yourself miserable associating everything with Christianity then go for it man. Listen to Jingle Bells and think "bloody oppression". but you're really just fooling yourself.

Uh, it kind of is. I know plenty of non-Christians who celebrate Christmas just because they enjoy all of the traditions that go along with it. They don't do any religious stuff, they just decorate a tree, make cookies, give presents, that sort of thing. Hell, one of my friends is a Shinto priestess and she celebrates Christmas because she likes the holiday.

That post is more reasonable and nuanced than anything you've posted today, but it still boils down to using some people being meanies to you over your perfectly reasonable choice not to observe a holiday as an excuse to whine about how other people view the holiday regardless of how their personal view affects you.

You seem to be under the assumption that anyone who demands others celebrate Christmas regardless of faith is 1) serious as hell, and 2) has every intention of killing Jews for not celebrating Christmas. And that anyone who refers to Christmas as secular is okay with murders done in the name of religious hatred.

I honestly can't tell if you were born with a serious persecution complex or if you acquired it through repeated encounters with Christmas folks and whatever you were taught. Whether or not you're so goddamn itching for a fight that you'll attach general nonmalicious human ignorance to the historical suffering of your people, and then try to make that your main argument against a comment that had nothing to do with it so that everyone will recognize you as a victim.

Christmas is secular. People around the world celebrate it. But they don't have to. You don't have to. But if you insist it isn't secular, then you're only kidding yourself.
