Hypocrite much?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Get over yourself. People can do what they want with their own fic.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure they mean the OP of the secret...

I imagine that's why it's a secret

You saved it, what's the problem?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
At least you got to save your favorite before it was deleted. Not everybody's gotten that opportunity - especially not, say, six years ago.

Here's the thing

Even with non-porny stuff, people have every right to take things down, especially if they get published IRL and are concerned about too much overlap. (Like Cassandra Cla(i)re, but she's a bad example.)

Also, I hate when people on Ao3 re-publish them saying "I had this fic on file and just wanted to repost it because it's soo good!" Stop doing that. Seriously.

So yeah, I'm sorry you're bummed, but it's their right.

People do that? Repost other peoples' fics? Wow, people are entitled.

+100

When I was young I wrote a bunch of fic. I was going through a tryhard 'mature' phase and wrote a bunch of shit that when I looked back on I was so embarrassed I could have died.

I took it down because I no longer wanted to see it, and no longer wanted to be associated with it. If someone reposted something that had early versions of my own characters (which I eventually de-fanfictionalized) that I didn't want them associated with, I'd be hella pissed.

However if it was with all canon characters? I would just ask them to take my name off. Take credit if you want, but I don't want it associated with me.

Yes, exactly. And let it be a lesson - if you really love it, download the bloody thing.

Also, "bitch" is totally uncalled for.

Not the OP, but...

I understand that authors have the right to take their stories down. I'm a fanfic writer, too.

However, I also believe that readers have every right to be upset when an author takes down a fic they love (which is why you can find even my crappiest crap from the late '90's in certain archives. Because I recognize that somehow, some people still like what I wrote.).

It's a two-way street, imo.

While I am sad whenever I find that a fic that I want to read has been deleted(and this is especially common-place with older fandoms) the writer is under no obligation to keep it up if they don't want to.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh-oh! If you keep using words like b*tch, the poster above will refuse to listen to your jazz.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're going to call people bitches for taking down their own creations, that do not belong to you, whose fate you have no say in, then you don't deserve anything that awesome. Hell, I hope nobody writes anything you like for a very long time if that's your attitude.

OP's wording sucked, but I get it. So to people who post their stuff in AO3 and who's thinking of taking down their works, please consider orphaning them instead. Especially for small fandoms or rare pairs. That way, people can still view them but you wouldn't be associated with it anymore.

+1

Also consider: addding your fic to the Anonymous collection. (The description is out-of-date; people looking at your profile can no longer tell if you have work in an unrevealed collection.) Your username is no longer on it, but you still have control, can make edits, even delete the thing later if you really need to.

Or they can do what they want and don't have to not delete them just to please you.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
What I noticed, especially with smut fics, is that the author later becomes uncomfortable or embarrassed with what they wrote and want to distance themselves from it.

Sometimes when your shipping something you get caught up in it, but it isn't until you look back later that you are not satisfied with it anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 02:49 am (UTC)(link)

If a writer deletes their fics and then comes back and posts more, I can never bring myself to go back to them and read them again.

I respect their right to delete - in one case, a writer I loved was in a custody battle with their ex who would have used the fic in court as a way of showing the other was an unfit parent, and it wasn't worth the risk. So I support the right to delete. I can just never trust that writer again or enjoy their fics knowing they may be pulled at any time.

Man, I was scrolling along and thought your stock photo lady was Sutton Foster. And I was excited for a second that there was somehow a secret about Sutton. Especially perhaps if it were about Broadway or Bunheads.

But no, it was just stock face-palm laptop lady. Although some theatre actors have been known to model for stock. Not Tony-winners (at least not yet, lol), but I know many young theatre actors and at least 4 of them are in some form of professional stock photos. It makes them do selfies where they're laughing alone with salad.
