Novel Length Fanfic Recs?

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2015-12-26 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
So I got a Kindle for Christmas and learned how to upload fanfics on it. I have a limited amount of money to buy stuff so, I'm probably going to end up putting a lot of fic on it because fic is free.

I'm looking for a lot of long/novel length fics. My preferred fandoms are Danny Phantom, Harry Potter, MLP: FiM. I also like Diigmon, Gravity Fall, Full Metal Alchemist.

Crossovers are good, AUs are good as long as they're reasonably well written and use the crossover/AU well. I like fics that explore a setting, or explore a minor character.

Honestly, neither of the ones with 60,000-word stories got as "interesting" as some of the shorter writers. One of them wrote a story that offended me on so many levels I no longer felt comfortable reading their work--it's difficult to explain why without getting into the intricacies of my abuse-of-power squick. (Attempts to justify and excuse abuse of power are my most frequent reason for staring at the screen in horror when trying to read My Little Pony fanfics. I blame the creepy monarchists who came in from heroic fantasy fandom, and to a lesser extent, the military sci-fi fans who somehow got into FIM from Spacebattles.) The other posted stories less and less frequently, posted self-pitying blog posts more and more frequently, and hinted more and more blatantly that she needed her fans to keep praising her and saying good things about her so she wouldn't give up and stop writing. The last time I checked on her, she hadn't updated a story in a year, but the self-pitying blog posts and blatant fan flattery kept rolling in.

Oh lord, Spacebattles. Fucking. Spacebattles. As someone who wanders around Fate/Stay Night fandom and others where that particular site is pandemic, I feel your pain.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10677106/1/Seventh-Horcrux (HP crack AU where Harry is Voldemort... sort of. It's hilarious.)

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7158052/1/The-Gunslinger-and-the-Mage (Crossover between HP and Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Novella-length rather than novel-length, but I'm rec'ing it anyway because it's one of the best HP crossover fics I've ever read.)

fanfic is good, but I'd also recommend signing up for BookBub. There are a lot of categories, and there is at least one free title every day. (I have something like 400 books on my Kindle atm :p)

Okay, let me begin by saying that I don't have many fics that are from the fandoms you listed (because I got fed up with HP and DP long, long ago). I do, however, have a few things that can be read easily with very little background knowledge of the fandoms involved:

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3283823/1/Pits -Danny Phantom. So, you know how every time there's a thread where we post what we want more of out of fandom, and I always say, "more pit fight AUs please?" This fic is why.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8398832/1/From-Dust -DP/HP crossover, sadly unfinished as of now (but hypothetically still in progress at least). I remember it being good? Same author's got a VERY good Pokemon fic that's also unfinished but at close to 350k words it's not like you'd notice...

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5984812/1/Two-Step -Left 4 Dead 2. All you need to know is that this guy Nick has three friends, it's the zombie apocalypse, and they got separated. If you really want to know what the zombie types look like, it'll take about 5 minutes on the L4D wiki.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7679074/1/The-Dragon-King-s-Temple -Avatar: the Last Airbender/ Stargate. If you know anything about either of these fandoms, check this out, because it's legit one of the best crossovers I have ever seen. Really well plotted, and takes pains to make sure that two very, very disparate fandoms mesh as cleanly as possible, without either fandom overshadowing the other.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2068984/1/The-Shape-of-His-Heart -FFX. If you played the game, you're good for this one, and it's really, REALLY good. Perfect Rikku, and actually makes me believe that Auron/Rikku is a thing that could happen without either being out of character.

And the big gamble:
http://archiveofourown.org/series/10129 and http://archiveofourown.org/series/11260 Re-entry, by Flamethrower -Star Wars. If you've seen 1-6, you're fine, although having seen some of Clone Wars apparently helps. Pretty much the best Peggy Sue I've ever seen, largely because there's more than one person who gets randomly sent back in time, and also because the changes characters make have reasonable ripple effects. Also it's like a million fucking words, split into two series for some reason.

Also, if you know the basics of Fate/Stay Night, I might have a few more for you.
