I really couldn't care less if Hermione is played by a black actress but Rowling should stop pretending that Hermione was never canonically white. It's so easy to disprove.

I think it's accurate to say that Hermione was easily interpretable as white, and I think you can probably stretch what Rowling said to mean that.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Omg this. No one cares that an adaption casts a black actress as Hermione. That's completely cool.

But the book literally mentions Hermione's white face. So, unless someone wants to claim her as asian the matter is settled. (But then, just very few people bend canon around to prove that a character's asian. I wonder why that is...)

Yes, because describing that she's pale with fear is totally a race. It's my favorite ticky box ever.

Depending on the darkness, they definitely pale obviously and can take on sickly tints. You can also see when blushing.

No one cares.

That's good though, I can share and drop information and fun facts without worry.

"You’re not the center of the universe. In fact, no one really cares about you. It’s harsh, but true. Sure, you have family and a few great friends. They will take particular interest in various parts of your life, helping you when needed. But they don’t care about you nearly as much as you care about yourself. Ultimately, you’re not top of mind to anyone but yourself. When properly understood, this is incredibly freeing and valuable.

After my umpteenth failure, an incredible realization washed over me: No one cared. No one remembered my mistakes. Here and there, people would have faint memories, but they quickly faded. I was free: free to try hard, fail, learn, rinse, and repeat. I could be reincarnated with each new endeavor.

In the end, no one cares — and that’s great. Find what makes you happy, work hard, and live fearlessly. If you screw up, no one cares. Neither should you." - larger article source

tldr; You don't care and I don't care that you don't care and that is good!

"White" faces don't actually turn white with fear. They just turn paler-cream.

You do realize that black people come in all shades? Plenty of black-skinned people are very light (or "white") indeed.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
A woman as dark-skinned as Noma Dumezweni would not go pale. Certainly never enough to have a "white face".

I adore PoC Hermione headcanons, but this is the exact same bullshit as "Dumbledore is totes gay I promise!!!" and you know it. Hermione was written as white. Don't give Rowling points she doesn't deserve; she did not write a black character. She even said that Emma Watson was exactly how she'd always envisioned Hermione.

I'm giving her all the points for not being a snippy asshole when one of her characters was cast as a black woman, and for shutting down "but caaaaanooooon" objections to that casting. Which is how I read her tweet-- supportive of the artistic choices made by the people who cast the play.

As for Dumbledore, I was a teacher for years and I can promise you that my sexual orientation never ever figured into my relationships with my students. So she could certainly have always envisioned Dumbledore as gay-- or most of the other teachers as well-- and still not have it relevant to the lives of the students.

how many posts are you going to make about how SJWs hate Asian people

(Anonymous) 2015-12-28 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

This one and the short comment I gave the OTHER anon making the same complain.

Two different people having a similiar thought, unbelievable! :D

(Anonymous) 2015-12-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Two half-wits who share the same thought count as one person.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-28 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

Yeah, that's a good idea: an insult as the best way to win an argument. Good luck with that.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
But then I've half-black half-white peoples faces look pale to the point of white sometimes too. But whatever.

And if you want to bend the character to be Asian, more power to you. Why not try to get something going instead of bemoaning that not enough people imagine Hermione as Asian?
