Mad Max: Fury Road.
Head and shoulders above anything else 2016 had, even Star Wars: Episode VII "It Doesn't Suck", with superior storytelling, acting, and technique.

Mad Max: Fury Road is still by far my favorite movie this year. I wish they would re-release it in theaters so I could see it 2-3 more times.

Second favorite is Slow West. Amazing cowboy movie AND Michael Fassbender? Hell yeah! It was also gorgeous.

The Martian is probably my third favorite. It would be second if it were not for those two changes that I really, really hated at the end.

Fourth is Avengers: Age of Ultron. It was fun and got better on rewatches.

Spy is probably my fifth favorite. It was fucking hilarious and I wish more people had seen it.

Special mention for Ant-man and Jurassic World for being fun, popcorn flicks!

I just mentioned Spy! I think everyone assumed it would be slapstick humor and fat jokes, and while there was a bit of slapstick, it really wasn't another stupid comedy.

It was so damn good! I was in tears for some of the bits because I was laughing so hard.

The Force Awakens is far and away first.
Jurassic World is second.
Mockinjay Part 2 is third.
Magic Mike XXL is fourth.
Inside Out is Fifth.
Ant Man is sixth.
Age of Ultron is seventh. So many problems but still a Marvel movie.
Cinderella is eighth. I just really liked it. Frothy, yes, but pretty (and Cate Blanchett is stunning perfection).

I don't know which one was my stand-out favourite, but I enjoyed Star Wars, Jurassic World, The Martian and Antman a hell of a lot.

Mad Max was good fun too, I didn't love it the way my bf did but it was a decent action movie with a lot of cool effects. Plus I liked the costuming.

(Also I'd sort of add Jupiter Ascending here since I saw it this year and my god that film was so much dumb fun).

I saw like... Nothing this year, lol. But tbh I'm one of those people who doesn't see a lot of movies in general (Not for lack of wanting to!) so this isn't surprising.

So definitely Star Wars. Even if I had seen a lot it would probably be Star Wars for the nostalgia factor.

Oh, and Kingsman! I adored Kingsman and had an amazing time in the fandom.

Spy with Melissa McCarthy. It was really underrated too; I don't think dueling with Mad Max did it any favors, but I also don't think a lot of people realized how smart and actually rather female-positive it was. I didn't even want to see it because I assumed it would be slapstick, but my friend talked me into it.

Favorite: Ex Machina. I'm ambivalent about the ending, but it was complex and subtle enough that my father and I spent a good 90 minutes discussing it, in depth, after we watched it, and I still think about it sometimes.

Second favorite: Star Wars. Fun, well written, and I loved how balanced the gender representation felt in it. It didn't feel like a feminist movie or a woman-centric movie; it just felt balanced, without a bunch of lazy gender role BS stuffed in.

A clarification, because I actually like feminism and am a feminist.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-28 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
It didn't feel like a feminist movie

Derp. I mean like capital F Feminist, "This is a Feminist Movie with an Important Feminist Message," type movie. It was feminist enough, and that's a good thing. It just wasn't trying to be a Feminist Movie.

Mad Max Fury Road. One of the best movies I've seen in theater in years.
