LJ itself made a lot of shitty decisions that drove people away; I remember several mass-exoduses to Dreamwidth/InsaneJournal/etc. That's definitely part of it. But tumblr was without a doubt the nail in the coffin - it gave all of those splintered groups a definite place to go.

But yeah I remember a lot of people fleeing to greener pastures well before LJ was well and truly "dead", too.

AYRT - Definitely, but honestly, I did a poll with about 60 people (I advertised it a bit), and while a few people cited LJ's bad decisions, most people said what drove them away was the lack of activity. So while I definitely don't think LJ's shitty decisions helped, I really think the bigger issue is that it turned into a vicious cycle.

For me, personally, one of the reasons I stopped posting on LJ was that it was becoming less and less of a fandom thing and more and more of a personal blog.

What would happen is this: I'd get into a fandom, make friends, write fic, translate, etc., and eventually move on to a different fandom (as you do), and the cycle would repeat itself, with the fandom friends who became RL friends though our interactions remaining on my friend's list with a genuine interest in RL posts and vice versa. Rinse, repeat enough iterations and now I find I have overwhelmingly more people on my friend's list that are friends who don't share my current fandom and aren't interested in my fandom posts. But LJ is where I go to talk about fandom; I can talk to all of these RL friends on Facebook, IM, etc.

So I'd get complaints from RL friends if I posted too often about fandom, complaints from fandom friends if I posted too often about RL, complaints from random strangers if I didn't post enough translation (my fandom community service, basically)... damned if you do, damned if you don't, and I just stopped posting altogether. And got a tumblr. No one really seems interested in actual friendship on tumblr, so it's all fandom, all the time.

But as so many people have pointed out, without getting into the whole ~durn SJWs are ruining everything~ (as I've yet to come across a single one of these dreaded terrors in my fandoms on tumblr), tumblr simply as a platform has a few critical flaws that kill productive discussion dead.

You could have filtered posts to display to different groups, I guess.

Or made different accounts: one for fandom, one for personal posts.

But at the time LJ was already waning in terms of both readers or posters, so I didn't bother.

I agree with you, but I have to wonder why everyone chose tumblr of all things. Discussion on there is... possible, but really hard to follow. Proper discussion can really only go on between two people and it looks like a cluttered mess on you and your followers dashboards.

Like someone said tumblrs biggest strength is people reblogging gifs. Also maybe giving fanartist a good opening to share their art in the tags. But for every other fandom related thing, it falls flat.

Oh for fanartists I'm sure it's amazing. It's done wonders for two fanartist acquaintances of mine in terms of exposure. They were also two of the first BNFs to bail on LJ - and dragged their followers along by virtue of refusing to cross-post.

But yeah, it sucks ass for absolutely everything else. It's been the death of productive meta-discussion in fen-dominated space, absolutely.

Makes me wonder if whatever comes after tumblr will be a callback to older forums, or if it'll be some kind of hyper!tumblr with absolutely no discussion whatsoever.

I really wonder if the microblogging trend on Tumblr and Twitter has shortened [many] fans' attention span to the point where most are incapable of producing much of anything. Even comments are rare, in my experience.

For example, I know several excellent ex-LJ fan writers who either stopped writing when they moved to Tumblr, or resorted to posting the occasional one- or two-sentence "scenario" (headfic: imagine characters X and Y doing Z!) and leaving it at that. Not a good sign IMO.

OK, putting my cane down now...

The worst decision lj made was to support Russian dissidents. It didn't save democracy in Russia, it didn't stop Russian security services killing whomever they liked, but it did mean a lot of pointless down time from DDoS attacks while they tracked them down. It should never have been sold to the fucking Russians to start with.

Yeah, fuck anyone who does what little they can to oppose a brutal and fascistic government. I want my hurt/comfort and I want it NOW!
