Re: It's not because of tumblr, imo

I agree with you, but I have to wonder why everyone chose tumblr of all things. Discussion on there is... possible, but really hard to follow. Proper discussion can really only go on between two people and it looks like a cluttered mess on you and your followers dashboards.

Like someone said tumblrs biggest strength is people reblogging gifs. Also maybe giving fanartist a good opening to share their art in the tags. But for every other fandom related thing, it falls flat.

Oh for fanartists I'm sure it's amazing. It's done wonders for two fanartist acquaintances of mine in terms of exposure. They were also two of the first BNFs to bail on LJ - and dragged their followers along by virtue of refusing to cross-post.

But yeah, it sucks ass for absolutely everything else. It's been the death of productive meta-discussion in fen-dominated space, absolutely.

Makes me wonder if whatever comes after tumblr will be a callback to older forums, or if it'll be some kind of hyper!tumblr with absolutely no discussion whatsoever.

I really wonder if the microblogging trend on Tumblr and Twitter has shortened [many] fans' attention span to the point where most are incapable of producing much of anything. Even comments are rare, in my experience.

For example, I know several excellent ex-LJ fan writers who either stopped writing when they moved to Tumblr, or resorted to posting the occasional one- or two-sentence "scenario" (headfic: imagine characters X and Y doing Z!) and leaving it at that. Not a good sign IMO.

OK, putting my cane down now...
