Most people haven't heard of Cavendish, though. Most people HAVE heard of Shelley, so she's the one that gets all the credit here.

It's the same phenomenon where people wanting SJ brownie points will gush about whichever black actor is currently "in" and fancast them in everything ever, because they aren't familiar with any other black actors. (Case in point: Idris Elba. Don't get me wrong, I like him, but he's not the ONLY black actor that exists!)

Idris Elba is so ugly, I WISH people would think of another black actor to want in everything.

Get out of here with your blasphemy.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
So, now my mental image of you is a fat chick with long blond hair, tight pants, gold hoop earrings and a loud, attitudinal voice obtained by badly imitating the local black girls.

I'm alright with this. Just make sure you give me a nice rack.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, you'll need something to feed your little... piglets with once De'Jontae leaves you for his next babymamma.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Now now, don't fight. You're both equally terrible people! :D

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think he's handsome but also overrated. Probably wouldn't if the media had another example of a great looking black dude.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
How? I know different people have different tastes and all, but he's so plain and moldy looking. I just do not get why so many people gush over him. What are you seeing?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. For me I like his eyes, they're intense looking and knowing. I know that sounds dumb. But like i said, he's rather overrated, there are so many men that are considered average to ugly that do it for me more.

I know what you mean about the eyes.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
...Michael B. Jordan? I mean.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
You fuckin' can't be serious?!...Are you on meth!?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'VE heard of Cavendish, and I still disagree with Blitzy, so nyah.

It's hard to disagree with me when I haven't really stated an opinion. Are you saying you think that Mary IS the first sci-fi author?

Or are you disagreeing with me that some people would rather just go "A WOMAN WAS THE FIRST ____!!!" instead of actually educating themselves about the history of women writers?

Women writers have accomplished so many revolutionary things in literature that it's sad that instead of learning about that, or appreciating what Shelley did, people would rather just go "NEENER NEENER! THIS WOMAN WAS THE FIRST SCI-FI AUTHOR!".

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm disagreeing with what I saw as the implication that the main reason people have a particular opinion re: Mary Shelly is because of a combination of ignorance and unreflective rah-rah feminism.

If that's not what you were trying to imply, then I apologize.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
SA - like, I do think that Mary Shelley was the first sci-fi author, but even though I disagree with your opinion on that, it's not really what I'm objecting to.

AYRT

I said most people haven't heard of Cavendish, not I AM THE ONLY PERSON WHO HAS EVER HEARD OF CAVENDISH, SHE IS THE OBSCUREST OF THE OBSCURE. And it's true. If you ask some random person on the street, or hell, some random person on a fandom forum if they're more familiar with Frankenstein or The Blazing World, what answer do you think they're going to give?

In any case, I don't see how you personally having heard of Cavendish disproves what I'm saying.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
It proves that there are people who think of Shelley as the first science fiction writer for reasons besides ignorance.

Perhaps you're right on that count, but do you really think most of the people on tumblr who are trumpeting Shelley as the founder of SF have heard of Cavendish?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-29 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I don't go on tumblr.
