The internet is like a planet. It's like asking if you find Earth dangerous or scary. Lava is scary. 4chan is lava. Fandomsecrets is a nice coffee shop in a slightly sketchy neighborhood, but goddamn do they make a good latte so it's worth the trip. Good atmosphere, good friends, occasionally someone is a dickbag over the price of a scone and Case throws them out on their ass, locks the door, and we watch them pitch a fit in the street with our faces pressed against the cold glass window. I forgot where this metaphor was going. But no, I don't think the internet is particularly dangerous.

I'm also a cishet straight white male, but I have reached the point that I am legitimately afraid to go outside. I get a ride to and from work, and I don't leave the house at all unless I have to. People scare the shit out of me and they're fucking everywhere out there. The internet is where I go to be a person. I can't be afraid to be a person on here, because then what's left?

I do acknowledge that the real world is worse for women than it is for me. And I know a lot of that will follow women on to the internet, but I just can't see the internet as being any worse than the real world for anyone.

No. What is someone on the internet going to do to me? I guess send me angry anon messages on Tumblr. It would be too much of an effort for someone to find out where I live. And if they did, they'd have to come here and no one wants to visit where I live.

I'll just say, the most disturbing shit I've dealt with had nothing to do with the fact I was a woman.

It was because I was an innocent summer child who wore their heart on their sleeve and some sadsack that gets twisted pleasure from upsetting people on the internet decided that I looked vulnerable.

I don't. But then I'm not very visible either, considering I mostly lurk around fandom spaces. I figure if you've got a popular blog or twitter account, you'd probably get hate whether you're male or female. But yes, I do believe women in that case will get more and it will be more vicious. Sort of like a bad neighborhood in RL: both men and women are liable to get attacked, but the odds are worse for women and they have more to fear.

Overall no, although I'm very private about myself on most sites but that's more of a general caution thing rather than fear.

I'm somewhat more cautious about anyone knowing I'm female on WoW but that's from having some bad experiences years back, and I do think that's gotten better in-game over the years(you still get some jackasses but I think most of them are just trolls trying to get a rise).

Sometimes I worry that I'll be doxxed but that's it and it's not gender-motivated. Some people are nasty as fuck about gender online but what are people NOT nasty as fuck about online?

As a woman you always have the nagging feeling - however incorrect it is - that the men around you want to harm you, or do you damage. We of course know logically this isn't true, but the feeling is always there. But online, this fear is controllable.

So no. The internet is the safest place for in the world.

About as scary as the real world, I guess. Maybe a little less so since I can choose what sites I go to and who to speak to. In real life I can't choose if a rapist follows me home or whatever.

Sidenote: the het in "cishet" means the same as "straight", so saying that you're "cishet straight" is redundant. Unless of course you want to be like, double straight.

For online forums about movies, video games, etc. I've always felt fine.

But when it comes to things like online dating. Yeah...I'm super cautious.

Honestly, no. Outside of slash fandom I'm assumed to be a man most of the time and I just don't bother to correct them. You can't really get away with that in real life without binding and voice lessons. Then again, the few times I've "outed" myself, so to speak, nobody seemed to give a fuck, so...

The only thing it really did was immediately disqualify me from having an opinion on threads about women in the minds of some, which was unintentionally hilarious. Nobody wants girls raining on their pity party about friendzones and female characters in video games. We're biased. Only men really understand what girls think about gender issues and relationships, lol. Opinion on the best Skill-focused build in Bloodborne? Have vagina, no problems. Opinion on an article about female game developers in the workplace? Well Ari's a girl so shit no, she doesn't know what she's talking about. Here, allow me to mansplain.
