I think what they were trying to say was that we make the argument that people can be influenced by some things in media and then turn around and say "we should trust people to be smart enough not to be influenced" when it comes to other things in media.

But anyway, people in the scene tend not to like 50 Shades because they've seen people doing unsafe things IRL after reading it, and also because the series ultimately presents BDSM as something that only deviants and damaged people are into. Ana "rescues" Christian, and part of the evidence that he's fixed is that he no longer wants to have kinky sex.
