I hate that they kill him because they didn't know what to do with him.
Also why can't ANY ship get the happy end nowadays? Why writers must do drama and tragedy fir the sake of it? They kind of ruined Han/Leia :( I want my happy end back.

I'm 99% positive he was killed because it was the only way to get Harrison Ford to come back and play him. Ford hates Han Solo. The carbonite scene in ESB was done at Ford's request because he was sick of the character.

Kinda, it was done because he wasn't signed on for two sequels like the rest of the cast, and was a big enough star he could afford to say no a third film... but he didn't.

I felt like it made a lot of sense for Ren's character. It didn't seem gratuitous or anything.
