The number of books and dramas that are out there, I'm surprised there isn't more of a fandom presence.

Oh, I think there are a lot of people who are interested in the topic, but it doesn't work exactly like a fandom in the traditional sense, I suppose, nor does it operate in the usual fandom spaces, like tumblr.

Hell, the places where the topic is treated like a "typical" fandom tend to be frowned on by most people, i think? By which i mean: communities of serial killers fangirls who gush over how pretty they are and have actual shipping wars are absolutely a thing, but even if i'm interested in true crime i wouldn't touch those communities with a ten-foot pole. Lots of people love that true crime stuff. I've seen tons of discussion of Making A Murderer. So it's not that fandom doesn't exist - it's that (a) the expression of fandom is different, since the shippy, fanwork-y style of fandom expression does not make sense for true crime shows (b) the group of people who are talking about it are distinct from the group of people who are talking about traditionally fandom-y things.

But, like, does it have a fanbase? Absolutely. It's just a different fanbase.

I'm halfway through this series and it's very compelling. I remember listening to a podcast about the case maybe a year or so ago (I couldn't work out why the story was so familiar at first). I also really liked The Jinx, and I can never resist a true crime book.

So yeah, there's definitely a lot of true crime fans out there. I just think that it's not something that really inspires fanworks so you can't treat it like a normal fandom.

If anyone's interested in the podcast: http://www.radiolab.org/story/278180-reasonable-doubt/

Yeah, I wouldn't really call myself a "fan", so to speak, because it sounds weird to say you're a fan of stories about real life murders/murderers.

But I definitely watch a lot of true crime shows. I don't have Netflix, so I've yet to see this particular documentary. But I watch the Investigation Discovery channel a lot. The forensics, the way trials can either turn out well or get completely messed up, the psychology behind why people commit the crimes they do...it is quite fascinating stuff.

well... it's hard to have the typical fandom creativity when it's something so depressing and horrible. chibis of steven avery and his lawyers with an evil cackling ken kratz in the background? fic? that's what draws a lot of ppl into fandoms.

Have you tried Twitter? I know it's a weird format but I see a lot of people discussing this show there

I believe there was/is quite a bit of discussion on ONTD about The Jinx/Serial/Making a Murderer.

I don't know about fandom, but AV Club has several episode reviews and newswire articles about Making a Murderer, all with very active Disqus comment sections. I'm sure there are plenty of people there who want to talk about whatever theory or new development you want to talk about, if they aren't already!

Also, the doc is shocking and riveting. I don't think I've ever been as angry watching a show as I was watching the parts about how Brendan Dassey was treated.

There are definately fans of the genre, but it's the sort of thing that belongs more in discussion posts than next to Yu-Gi-Oh fanfiction. Mostly because any ship fics or AUs would be super disturbing.
