I think it's like the difference between showing murder and rape on tv shows: objectively you'd think murder is the worse crime, but it's still vastly less problematic to portray in fiction.

With baddies getting shot to death we think "this is entertainment and we totally know it's not cool in real life". While with rape scenes... you've definitely got that creepy portion of audience who'll think "awesome, I'd fuck that bitch too" or some shit.

That just reminds me of the old Chris Rock routine. "We're going over there to kill Saddam Hussein. We're not going over there to rape him, because that would be wrong."
