Not OP, but I think one of the reasons I've wondered is because we never see Katniss have a strong relationship with any other female characters. Even Prim... yes, the whole point is supposed to be that Katniss is the best sister ever and Prim means the world to her, but if we're honest she's not seen actually interacting with Prim very often. It's established that Prim is the most important factor in Katniss's life, but not really shown. Even with Madge... we know they were friends, we know Katniss was sad that Madge was killed, but there's no real connection. Not like Katniss and Rue, whom Katniss actively protected.

So maybe the better solution is for the books to have had Katniss have a strong relationship with someone besides Gale and Peeta and Haymitch?

That might have helped, but would have needed the story to be quite different of course. Though I do think Rue's age an innocence play a lot into it, too.

Personally I have much more trouble with Prim's death, story-wise that is, because it felt much cheaper.

(And frankly I don't really like her with either Peeta or Gale by the time the story's through).

Well, to be fair, pre-Games Katniss did not have a strong relationship with anyone, exept Prim and Gale.

The way I interpreted it was that she develeoped massive trust issues due to the fact that her mother became depressive after her father's death and she was left all alone in figuring out how to survive.

I always viewed it as part of her character development how she learned to interact with people on a more open basis and that she learned to trust again.
