I sort of get that, because she's such a nice character...though I'd say story wise her death was one off the most powerful moments of the series as a whole, and relevant to Katniss' character development.

Out of all deaths in the series, I think hers is the most meaningful and shocking - which is exactly why I wouldn't take it out.

was it really shocking though? I mean, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that all of the kids in the hunger games except peeta and katniss would have to die

I think it was shocking to me because she was really young and non-violent herself? Or because Katniss did have that sort of protective big sister thing going on with her?

Obviously, it's all really shocking. But I think with Rue it hits home more than with the older (career) kids who are really good fighters.

Objectively, it's equally tragic if they die. Subjectively, it it's about what touches you as a reader or viewer, and I do recall being quite affected by it.

Not OP, but I think one of the reasons I've wondered is because we never see Katniss have a strong relationship with any other female characters. Even Prim... yes, the whole point is supposed to be that Katniss is the best sister ever and Prim means the world to her, but if we're honest she's not seen actually interacting with Prim very often. It's established that Prim is the most important factor in Katniss's life, but not really shown. Even with Madge... we know they were friends, we know Katniss was sad that Madge was killed, but there's no real connection. Not like Katniss and Rue, whom Katniss actively protected.

So maybe the better solution is for the books to have had Katniss have a strong relationship with someone besides Gale and Peeta and Haymitch?

That might have helped, but would have needed the story to be quite different of course. Though I do think Rue's age an innocence play a lot into it, too.

Personally I have much more trouble with Prim's death, story-wise that is, because it felt much cheaper.

(And frankly I don't really like her with either Peeta or Gale by the time the story's through).

Well, to be fair, pre-Games Katniss did not have a strong relationship with anyone, exept Prim and Gale.

The way I interpreted it was that she develeoped massive trust issues due to the fact that her mother became depressive after her father's death and she was left all alone in figuring out how to survive.

I always viewed it as part of her character development how she learned to interact with people on a more open basis and that she learned to trust again.

I thought her death was the easy way out. Obviously Rue had to be killed off or Katniss couldn't have been the winner. If Rue hadn't been killed, it would have made the games way more challenging for Katniss.

I do wish Rue would have survived just to see how things would have played out.
