I'm more surprised he doesn't have a major twitch from getting electrocuted so many times. ;)

As for massive repeated trauma, 'tis the plight of a main character in an animated franchise.

Not everyone who goes through trauma gets PTSD, people are just wired differently.

Also it's a kids show.

Well, the OP outright mentions the kids' show bit in their secret, I don't think that's escaped them.

I assumed they meant that this is just what pops into their mind even if intellectually they know it's a kids show and characters in kids shows react to near-death experiences differently than real kids. And I don't know about OP, but I always find it kind of fun to look at kids' shows from a "realistic" POV just to discuss the perspective for kicks.

How many times has he died again?

I lost count...

1. First movie, got turned into stone (edit: apparently word of god says he wasn't actually dead but that's super bullshit)
2. That episode in Lavender Town, with the Gastlys

and that's where my memory blanks

In Movie #8, got eradicated by the Tree's antibodies.

I feel like there's one more I'm forgetting.

As for how many times he ALMOST died, I don't think I can even count them all. About 1/2 of the number of all aired episodes to date is a good estimate.

I don't think PTSD exactly works that way, but I'm no psychologist. Trauma isn't sufficient to develop PTSD, there are a few different factors at work. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me could give a more detailed explanation.

Not related to the secret at all, but I just wanted to mention that this scene killed me when I saw it. It was even worse than when he died in the Mewtwo and Lucario movies because he was dying slowly and failed to save Victini like he was trying to do, rather than just being struck dead quickly.

/says the frickin' 26-year-old woman

A positive attitude and lots of denial?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone who has some kind of formal education about PTSD around?

If I recall correctly, PTSD is most likely to develop if a) it is completely unexpected and worldview-shattering to the person who undergoes the traumatic event (like violent assaults/rapes, serious natural disasters, car accidents or fires, that come out of nowhere) or b) if the traumatic events and any related danger and stress is long-term and constant (combat zones, abusive environments, long-term post-disaster or refugee situations) or - to a lesser extent - c) if the person doesn't have any good emotional support system that can neutralize the impact of trauma on the brain. None of these apply to Ash.

I could well be wrong though, so don't take this as an expert opinion or anything.

I would say that A applies to him. I mean, he did DIE at least twice--that's pretty worldview-shattering and out of nowhere.

Oh, man.

Now I'm imagining Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, and Yosemite Sam with PTSD.
