For me fandom sucks because it seems like the hate watchers are pushing out the people who want to squee. Why can't the haters find something they truly like instead of sucking yhe joy out of being fannish? But then again it seems like this new generation of fans is a joyless bunch in general, looking for things to rally against instead of to embrace. Damn killjoys. Get off my lawn.

I have seen, frankly, nothing which would lead me to agree with any part of this description. It really goes against the whole tenor of everything that I see in fandom these days. If I were to make a criticism it would be that people are too intensely passionate and serious in their positivity

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
We inhabit very different fandom spaces.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you should stop hanging out with assholes.

Nayrt, but in some fandoms that's EXTREMELY hard to do because the majority of vocal/actively participating fans are ALL like that

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
You don't hang out with them, they post in your fandoms tags or sometimes approach you if they don't like your opinion on something. There is a reason the tags/search of tumblr is known as a shitthole of fandom.

I don't know about every fandom. But it absolutely has happened in a lot of the Doctor Who spaces that used to be about excitement. The general Who coms have become inundated with hate, most about the Moffat era, and there is little room for people who actually like it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
true but Doctor Who fandom is fucking nutso to begin with

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
See also Sherlock. Fun, twisty turny episode the other night. Interesting good parts for the female actors involved. Instead of being appreciative, the usual Moffat is a Misogynist gang were having their usual strop.

If they know they don't like his work, why watch? And if they do watch, why not celebrate what is good and fun instead of complaining?

I don't even necessarily mind complaining. Just don't completely take over every fandom space and make it impossible for people to talk about what they enjoyed.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'll agree with this. There's being critical and complaining about a particular storyline that didn't suit you, and then there's just ranting about the show in general, to the point where it's pretty obvious just talking about it is raising one's blood pressure. At that point, I really do wonder why those people who are so angry with the show don't just take a break and move on to something else.

(And yeah, I get that it's hard to fully quit a show/you want to see if it'll get better, but sometimes the way people talk, I get the feeling they're not going to be happy regardless of what changes the show makes. And if they've come to hate the show that much, I'm guessing they probably don't care if it gets better anyway.)

I agree. And there is this one person in the LJ general Who community who always posts a link to his episode reviews and usually is 90% negative and says that everyone agrees with him and even people who think they don't actually do. It is so irritating. Like, dude, no, your opinion is your opinion, we don't all agree.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
They've actively driven several people off the comm for not agreeing with them too.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Eugh. That sounds obnoxious as hell. I feel sorry for the fans who get driven away because of that attitude.

I've some across several hatewatchers in the AOS fandom. And you know what - that's fine, hell some I even get along with, and I acknowledge the show has problems.

But don't try to suck out my joy of me watching it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well then you got lucky. It's literally every fandom I am a part of. Lots of drama lovers love to vague post about what they find annoying in fandom and tag their ship hate or try to stir up drama with others. You're lucky if your fandom is free of this kind of people, but they are in most popular fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that it sucks when someone is hate watching something you want to squee about, but I don't agree that this is what is wrong with fandom (especially since it's not a new thing.)

Like I've been on both sides of the coin, sometimes I want to squee, and sometimes I want to critique something seriously. And someone coming in saying "OMG you are being so hateful why don't you leave fandom" is JUST AS ANNOYING as someone coming in and ruining my squee party.

In fact I'd say it's more annoying when someone takes my serious critique and blows it off as me just being a "hater." Especially if it's just like, one episode or plot line I don't like but I'm still a fan in general.

I think BOTH sides really need to chill and get out of each other's business about either liking or hating an aspect of a book/show/movie/musical/etc. If you want to squee, go squee, if you want to criticize, you can do that too. Fights only begin when those two sides engage eachother and take it too personally. It's just fandom, we should all be able to have an opinion without jumping down each other's throats.

I agree! I was so disappointed when I got into Firefly, and the first Firefly forum I found (on TWOP - I didn't know better) was all "so this show actually sucks except for Mal and we hate Joss Whedon." I wanted to squee a little. But I've mentioned flaws in other things I've liked in some places and been accused of hating. No, I just had issues with one thing.

Again, agreed.

SA Joss Whedon hate gets really excessive at times, it tends to happen with certain directors where fandom gets really divided and then the critiques can't even be well thought out anymore because it's just super fan versus super hate.

Though if you DO want to squee I recommend going to places Joss trolls because then people get really afraid to say anything against him. It kind of sucks because it's light on real critique, but it's a good if you just want some positive reviews for a few minutes (currently there is still Whedonesque, there used to be a Browncoat board as well but I don't even remember what the web address is and have no clue if Joss would still even log on there.)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - Yeah, I'm the in between where I love most things about the shows, but don't worship the ground Joss walks on.

I think I tried some of those sites, but IIRC they were quiet and/or I couldn't get into them for other reasons. Now... I've kind of given up on trying to find Firefly talk that isn't "JOSS IS A GOD" or "Joss Whedon is evil and everyone sucks except Mal and Kaylee."

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
SA Yeah it can be super hard to be middle of the road in fandom. Thoughtful discussion can be difficult to pull of when people want to take some sort of side and disagree with whatever you say.

Like it's out there, but it's hard to find on public internet forums/social media. The only way I can really discuss certain things is if I already have friends who are into it.
