I understand that it sucks when someone is hate watching something you want to squee about, but I don't agree that this is what is wrong with fandom (especially since it's not a new thing.)

Like I've been on both sides of the coin, sometimes I want to squee, and sometimes I want to critique something seriously. And someone coming in saying "OMG you are being so hateful why don't you leave fandom" is JUST AS ANNOYING as someone coming in and ruining my squee party.

In fact I'd say it's more annoying when someone takes my serious critique and blows it off as me just being a "hater." Especially if it's just like, one episode or plot line I don't like but I'm still a fan in general.

I think BOTH sides really need to chill and get out of each other's business about either liking or hating an aspect of a book/show/movie/musical/etc. If you want to squee, go squee, if you want to criticize, you can do that too. Fights only begin when those two sides engage eachother and take it too personally. It's just fandom, we should all be able to have an opinion without jumping down each other's throats.

I agree! I was so disappointed when I got into Firefly, and the first Firefly forum I found (on TWOP - I didn't know better) was all "so this show actually sucks except for Mal and we hate Joss Whedon." I wanted to squee a little. But I've mentioned flaws in other things I've liked in some places and been accused of hating. No, I just had issues with one thing.

Again, agreed.

SA Joss Whedon hate gets really excessive at times, it tends to happen with certain directors where fandom gets really divided and then the critiques can't even be well thought out anymore because it's just super fan versus super hate.

Though if you DO want to squee I recommend going to places Joss trolls because then people get really afraid to say anything against him. It kind of sucks because it's light on real critique, but it's a good if you just want some positive reviews for a few minutes (currently there is still Whedonesque, there used to be a Browncoat board as well but I don't even remember what the web address is and have no clue if Joss would still even log on there.)

AYRT - Yeah, I'm the in between where I love most things about the shows, but don't worship the ground Joss walks on.

I think I tried some of those sites, but IIRC they were quiet and/or I couldn't get into them for other reasons. Now... I've kind of given up on trying to find Firefly talk that isn't "JOSS IS A GOD" or "Joss Whedon is evil and everyone sucks except Mal and Kaylee."

SA Yeah it can be super hard to be middle of the road in fandom. Thoughtful discussion can be difficult to pull of when people want to take some sort of side and disagree with whatever you say.

Like it's out there, but it's hard to find on public internet forums/social media. The only way I can really discuss certain things is if I already have friends who are into it.
