So much this. Is it problematic? Are the demographics corect? Does it pass the Bechtel test?

Screw that. Does it have interesting people to look at and do things occasionally explode? It's fandom. Give the textbooks a rest.

Do you really think that, in order to enjoy something, you cannot possibly ever think or talk about the other things in the first paragraph?

I'll be the first to admit that people do it in stupid ways sometimes, but that's people.

If you pick something apart for what it is not to the exclusion of what it is, you are not being fannish, you are doing a media studies assignment and probably sucking the fun out of the space you are inhabiting to the detriment of the people who are looking to just enjoy the book or game ot movie or show for what it is.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you trying to make a rule for who is and who isn't a good fan? What made you the person who decides what you have to do in order to be a fan? Fuck off. There's more than one way to engage with a work - you can even deal with a show or book in more than one way at a time. Again, fuck off.

Then find like-minded people to piss and moan about it with instead of bringing that shit into communities where nobody wants it.

I get that you're angry but, again, more than one thing can happen in a community at a time. People might even be interested in talking about things in more than one way.

And again - who decided that these communities were going to focus on only engaging in the precise way that you like? Who made you the president here?

Not when you have shitheads jumping all over everyone with proverbial torches and pitchforks over No-No Words and Problematic Opinions.

And again - who decided that these communities were going to focus on only engaging in the precise way that you like? Who made you the president here?

The community members who want to talk about the source material in peace without listening to people grasping for shit to complain about.

You sound like a 20-year-old white upper-middle-class college girl in your first week of Sociology 1000

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Dang

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
No. I will not fuck off, just because some foul-mouth brat doesn't like what I have to say. I don't yield to bullies. Mind your mouth and use actual words to defend your point or go away.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Cunt.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
But what is analyzing a piece of media is your way of enjoying it?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
If I make a Squee post then it should go without saying that anyone contributing should be positive in their contributions. But it no longer goes without saying. People have to be instructed to keep their criticism out of it, because hate watching is so ubiquitous and people have no boundaries any more.

Yes, those people are jerks. But often times if they are called on their behavior they have no idea they are being wet blankets. They genuinely think they are making positive contributions to the discussions.

And even when it's explained using small words, pie charts, and graphs, they still don't understand why people want them to shut up.

So very true...

Nah, I do think it's damn annoying if it's demanded of other people, though. And I'm not talking about the actually offensive stuff, just that they'll explode if someone rustles their jimmies. For example, i saw a first--time fic author pretty much get destroyed for shipping Willow/Giles in the Buffy fandom, because "Willow was gay now and it's horrible and misogynist to try and pair her with a man."
