I get where you're coming from OP; I've been in big active fandoms from time to time, but usually end up dropping out of the fandom side of things for all the same sorts of reasons that you list. On the plus side, I can go back to it later when everything's calmed down, and there's still lots of fic and meta around for me to browse through even if I'm not actively participating.

I don't know that the perfect small fandom exists, unfortunately. For the most part I have the opposite problem, where nearly all my fandoms are smaller/older, and... well, they're mostly just dead. Limited amount of fanfic with nothing new on the horizon, not much in the way of discussion... if I try and throw out any myself, all I get back is the sound of crickets chirping. (And while I tell myself that just writing fanfic should be fulfilling enough without getting feedback... it's not. I can deal with lack of comments, but if nobody's even reading it, it just seems like such a waste of my time.)
