The ones that scare me the most are the professionals, the lawyers and doctors, who when they're in fandom seem to act like the most terrifying, brattish eight-year-olds, demanding everyone ship what they ship or else be "called out", bullying, getting their followers to doxx others, to have their families harassed, their employers informed and so on. I've seen this happen and it's beyond belief. It's utterly terrifying that these people are real life professionals that people have to rely on.

I came across one fic, for instance, containing a scene in which a rape was discussed in confidence in a counseling session, then used as gossip fodder between other characters for the next few chapters of the fic. I left a comment wondering if there would be any consequences later on for the counselor's breach of trust, and that it should be interesting to see. The writer replied in surprise that she'd never even considered the possibility that the counselor might have a duty of discretion, and a little later she came back with the fact that she was a real life college counselor so she knew about the subject far better than I did.

I hope to God she was just lying to try to support her fic and not a real college counselor who students ever had to rely on in their hour of need.

...woooooooooooow...

She...seriously never considered that counselors need to be discreet about that stuff? I've never worked in that field and I KNOW THAT.

I don't know which would be worse in that instance, her saying that as a lie or genuinely believing it. That's scary.

So agreed on your first paragraph, too. Some of the behavior I've seen online from supposed adults has left me seriously tempted to find out where all of them live and take away their computers for good. It's really bizarre. And sad.
