21. Haha, I just read that it was translated in Duck in the American release, but still... this is the whole Sailor Moon= Usagi / Serena thing. orz; Who cares, people.

What a dumb thing to lose respect over. For serious. xD; It's such a cute series, don't whiiine. [and also, Duck IS a stupid name. Wut. XD Although I shouldn't say anything because there's someone canonically named Kraehe there when it's supposed to be Claire. Way to fail, official romanization team. XD;]

71. Eee, if you're playing the Tsubasa version you hardly have... well, any canon to go off of? S-so, I'm sure it's not that bad. Have some confidence ♥

21. I dunno, I think it's cute to call her Duck. It works with the fairy tale theme. But...losing respect over a NAME? Dumb as hell.

71. I-I know, but it's more pressure that way. I dunno ;;; I'm weird.
Haha, you don't even know me and you're telling me the same thing as my friends XD; I really need to start listening.

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
21. I guess it works. I don't know if Ahiru is a normal name in Japanese or if it just means duck. XD; I don't know, I just saw the dubs so she'll always be Ahiru to me.

71. Haha seriously? I'm always insecure about characters with little canon background because I don't feel that comfortable making certain aspects up, but just slowly ease into it, I guess? ♥ No worries!

Re: 21, 71 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-02-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
21. Ahiru just means Duck. So, it really doesn't matter. Or, shouldn't.

71. Same. It's like AAAH OMG what am I doing.
I don't really worry about that with Ashura, 'cuz it's not REALLY necessary with him. The personality's essential. I was on hiatus for a long time and dove straight back in without reacquainting myself, and now I feel really rusty.

21 - I call her Ahiru because I watch the show in Japanese, so it's habit by now. =I I don't mind if someone calls her Duck, though. That's a cute name, too~

I didn't know the bit about Kraehe. Now I'm happy. ^^-

21 OP here, making the rounds! Starting to hate myself! Drunk with the power to create 23480423 comments in F!S!

Seriously, though, you're upset over KRAEHE? It means 'crow' in German, and is fairly obviously the intended name--the localization team does, in fact, talk to the original creators of the show. Fansubbers do not. Please tell me you aren't calling Mytho Mute, and Fakir Fakia. (Disclaimer: I, too, originally watched the show in fansubs. I think that Ahiru --> Duck is a brilliant localization, and that is that).

'Ahiru' is not regularly used as a name in Japanese. Also, the entire anime takes place in a fairy tale that is fairly obviously German in origin--see Fakir's (awful) German speech, the names on all the signs, and even the language that Fakir writes in during the final episodes. Anyway, my point is not so much in everday fandom interactions, it's in fanfiction--if you're calling her Ahiru, you clearly missed the point of the series, and, more egregiously, the tone of the series. That's all.

Anyway, 'Sakura' is actually a name, so of course it shouldn't be literally translated (although living with somebody who only knows Chinese characters, it is pretty hilarious watching her literally translate the kanji used for names). Common sense, people. Common sense and artistic intent! They are my buzzwords of the day.

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
See, I just got used to the names the fansubbers used at first. I don't see why it should be held against me. A rose by any other name and all that. It took me a long time to get used to Mytho instead of Mute.

Although ahaha, didn't know about crow. S-sob. Now it sounds a little less like INCREDIBLY FAILED ENGRISH a-although if they were going completely with the names, I would assume Princess Crow would've been better. XD

So you use different names for said characters. Does it matter if people don't do this, because it derives from the tone of the series? To me, it doesn't. To lose respect for someone over something like that is... retarded, though.

Princess Tutu. SERIOUS BUSINESS.

...I got nothing. XD;

Eh, like I said in another thread, I worded the secret a bit strongly. I lose respect for people over lots of things--socks with sandals, using 'KAWAII!' non-ironically in everyday speech, collecting My Little Ponies (even though I myself collect MLP... a healthy sense of self-loathing is vital in this day and age). Doesn't mean I lose all respect for anybody, or even that I would avoid them; just that they're missing out on the awesome amounts of hero worship I provide to any and all who Get It Right.

Hahahaha, and yeah 'Mytho' took me a while too. How do you get from Mytho --> Myuuto? The answer is, surprisingly enough, the original Greek pronunciation! . . . yeah I spend too much time with this stuff; I just get sad whenever people lose the layers of meaning that went into the stupid ballerina magical girl serious business anime I love. OH WELL TL;DR I HARTZ TEH WORLD AND WOULD LIKE TO BUY IT A COKE.

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I can see your point. It'd be cute, had all the names been in the same LANGUAGE. But, it doesn't, and I preferred them as subtle, cute little puns instead of glaringly obvious in-your-face THIS NAME DEFINES WHO/WHAT I am.

But I've always been a bit of a puritan when it came to names and am very hesitant to take any other name than the original Japanese. Serena Moon or whatever she was called was so odd to me. XD;

Oh, no I love the series, I do, it's just... just because I use Ahiru doesn't mean I don't know her name doesn't mean duck, you know?

Re: 21, 71 OP

The problem is it's NOT subtle in the original Japanese, so that's not the original intent. ^^; Feel free to call her Ahiru, but...it's that way because original fairytales were often GLARINGLY OBVIOUS with name puns. (Snow White, anyone? Puss-in-Boots?)

If the show was set in Japan in modern times, I would've thrown a fit if they translated her name, but it's meant to be in a German fairytale.

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. But because I am not Japanese, I had always seen it as a cute pun. Like Usagi from Sailor Moon was a cute pun. Why should I call her Duck? It's still a dumbass thing to debate.

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to call her Duck, just don't say things like "and also, Duck IS a stupid name. Wut. XD Although I shouldn't say anything because there's someone canonically named Kraehe there when it's supposed to be Claire. Way to fail, official romanization team. XD;" Because, um, it just shows how ignorant you are, and how quick you are to bash American companies. It really doesn't make you much better than someone who says they lose respect for someone who uses "Ahiru".

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
LOL IGNORANT.

To me, it sounds dumb. I'm not saying people shouldn't use it. Wut?

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] freakyfanboy.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you basically implied the translation was "wrong" when you were in the wrong.

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
LOL I admit I made an ass out of myself, but I wasn't in the wrong with using Ahiru, nor the people using Duck.

To me, it sounds dumb. W/E.

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] barteredbride.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think Ahiru sounds dumb to the Japanese, too. XD; It's...kinda supposed to sound silly. Ducks are silly animals.

Honestly, I really don't care, call her whatever. I'm just tired of hearing really, well, dumb arguments that imply I'm "wrong".

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, now seriously, I don't care if someone calls her Ahiru or Duck, but...

AUGH, NO, IT'S NOT CLAIRE!!!

That was a FANSUB mistranslation! "Kraehe" is "Crow" in German--and the show is SET in Germany. Thus, her name translates as Princess Crow.

It is NOT, nor has it EVER BEEN Claire. Even the official Japanese stuff calls her Kraehe. ._.;;

For the record, Autor, not Aotoa ('Autor' is 'Author' in German) and Fakir, not Fakia ('Fakir' is an arabic word, meaning poor but used to refer to the mystics in India and such who perform feats like walking on coals.)

...sorry, but I love how they researched the names on the show, and it really bugs me when people use the wrong names (and then claim ADV got them wrong in the translation. Um, no. Professional translators > fansubs--at least, nowadays. Didn't always use to be that way.)

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
LOL YES THIS HAS BEEN POINTED OUT TO ME. Thanks for reading further. XD;

And I never called Autor Aotoa wtf. .__. How the hell am I now suddenly thrown all these names as if I'm doing all of them wrong? S-sob, srsly. xD; I APPRECIATE THE GESTURE AND THE LOYALTY TO THE SERIES but soapboxing to someone without proof they do write their names like this is a little odd. xD;

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Um, the words all translate in German, and ADV actually talked to the original creators...what proof do you need? Do you want me to go screencap the numerous times German text is shown the series? Hunt down scans of official fan guides?

Also, many people call Autor Aotoa, which is why I stated it. ^^;

It just bugs me, because it's one of the things that made Tutu 'special'...so to see someone say that the translation team actually got it WRONG is just...sigh. No.

I'm sorry. >.>;; I'm not normally this snippy, I just hate seeing American companies bashed unfairly, particularly when they actually translated it RIGHT and did their research.

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, aside from the word 'Duck', apparently. And Mytho has Greek elements? And Fakir. Yeah. XD; I know it's supposed to be German, I just say Ahiru. I know it's meant to be Duck. What does it matter? XD;

Well, the fact that they didn't call her the German word for Duck when Kraehe was used is... well, unusual, then. So not translating Kraehe into Crow is fine because it's German, but if it's Japanese, Ahiru has to be translated to English so everyone can know it's Duck instead of the German word for du-- oh God now I'm confusing myself. It's just irregular, is all.

Re: 21, 71 OP

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't matter, call her what you like. Just don't say "the translation team was stupid and got it wrong!" or insist that Ahiru is RIGHT. Both are right. I don't care if people call her Ahiru--I use "ahiru" in the RP I'm in--it just drives me NUTS when people use stupid, untrue arguments to do so.

It's not so unusual. Kraehe was supposed to be subtle--neither the English or Japanese audience will get it right awy. Ahiru/Duck was supposed to be in-your-face. It's the intention behind it.
