I do apologize most profusely for my failure. Not being English, though, I shall just call her Ankka from now on, shan't I?

Seriously. What next? Losing respect because someone doesn't call Inu-Yasha Dog Demon instead?

I know I do. Those bastards.

And did you hear that some people don't call Kagome Random Japanese Nursery Rhyme? The nerve of some people! Coral, Tail and The Laughing Buddha would be so horrified if they knew, I'm sure.

What? Some people, I swear. It's shit like this that puts me off of fandom. I can't stand these kids today and their obsession with original names.

This is actually a fair argument (as opposed to the Sakura one), as InuYasha as a name (like Ahiru) is supposed to sound unusual. It sure as heck isn't an actual Japanese name.

But then the theoretical wank comes in that his name could be translated in several different manners and even mean different things. XD

Well, Sakura isn't really a normal Japanese name either. From what i understand, certain names really only exist in manga. Oh, and some musicians might take names like that for stage names (like the first drummer of L'arc en ciel).

Sakura isn't uncommon in Japanese fiction period. Of course inevitably some names are going to be more common in fiction than IRL.

But I just mean that with few exceptions, Sakura isn't intended to be anything but a name.

Well, in Tutu, as far as the other characters know, neither is Ahiru. I really don' think there is much of a difference - they're both nouns that help create an image of the bearer of the name. Sakura has been used more often in different anime, so we're just more used to it.

I honestly don't mind when these sort of names are translated - I actually prefer it when they are, since it helps readers to get the correct image in their minds. The version of One Piece that's released in my country for example is amazing, as the translator has really worked on the translation of names of characters and places that have a certain meaning.

That said, I would never go on the internet and demand that the rest of the world should use the names in my country's version. I will use the original versions of the names, so people know what the hell I'm talking about.

No, in Tutu it is unusual. Her name is Duck and from the beginning it's presented as strange and even commented on. What I mean is that a character named Sakura is generally not named that for any particular plot reason. It's just a name. At most perhaps you could derive that the character grows up and "blooms" during the series, i.e. Sakura from Naruto.

I am not defending the OP at all, quite the opposite. But I do love the PT dub.

Well, Sakura has a lot of cultural significance that I suppose makes the audience think of the character in a certain way. OTOH, "Naruto" means "Maelstrom" (or "fishcake"), and they didn't translate that, did they? I hardly think that's a name that's ever been used in Japan...

Her name is Duck and from the beginning it's presented as strange and even commented on.

...It was? By whom?

I wonder, did they translate the other animal names? Like Waniko and, er... Arukuimi, I think? Or Neko-sensei?

Herself, I believe. I haven't watched the series in a while. Either way she actually is a duck so of course it's intended to be strange.

Neko-sensei got translated as Mr. Cat, if I recall. Don't remember the rest...
