Also because their relationship had a lot going on outside of will they or won't they tension.

Also because it genuinely wasn't clear whether or not the creators were going to go that way. Whereas most will they or won't they situations, it's incredibly obvious.

Yeah, I wouldn't have shipped them so hard if their relationship as partners and friends wasn't so well developed. All along, they were friends with a huge amount of mutual respect and it made the possible romantic dynamic so much more enticing.
