I thought it worked rather the opposite : start posting (especially if you have a long fic ready) and then people know you're a fan.

If OP only sent PMs to authors of popular fics, chances are they're drowned under messages, or have turned down notifications.

Also as others have pointed out, OP seems to expect there's a forum or something alike where all the kids hang out. Sadly, fandom barely works like that anymore. Authors may well have not replied because they don't hang out anywhere except on AO3...
