not op

I don't think it's a totally invalid point though

If we hear of someone having sex that we think of as young, what we do is check their age and oh they're 18? totes fine to have sex with all the peoples then. Wait they're underage by a week? no they're pure innocent children we must protect

Both reactions are extreme

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not my reaction in either case. It depends on how old the someone in question is- 20 year old has sex with a 17 OR 18 year old? Young people have libidos. A 30 year old has sex with a 17 OR 18 year old? What a sleazebag.

It's only sleazy if the consent is lacking. An 18 year old who likes older people isn't sleazy. They want what they want, even if it might not be best for them.

SA

Uh not disagreeing that countdowns are skeevy. They are. But the space of a second swap between innocent child and they're adult then no problem is definitely weird

you need to draw a line somewhere for the purposes of the law

AYRT

I know, I'm not complaining about it, but it's weird to me in the same way that knowing we have a pound of fat between our ears piloting our bodies is weird

I don't have to contest the rule to think it's very interesting to see people and society's vehement reactions to the arbitrary rule we made up

(Anonymous) 2016-01-07 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, of course, but apply that same line to morality is absurd. Legally having sex with a 17 years old is illegal, but it's not immoral.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-07 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
The legality of it depends on their age, and the morality on their maturity. But in a huge number of cases where it's illegal, it's also immoral. I would argue in the vast majority of such cases.

The point is that the objection to manga that we're talking about here is basically moral. The legal standard is in large part a convenient, agreed-upon shorthand for those moral standards.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-07 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Actually in some states the age of consent is lower so 17 is "legal" for them.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-07 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
if you're 18 yourself, sure, if you're 48 and having sex with a 17 year old I feel less sorry for your creeper ass

(Anonymous) 2016-01-07 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that a 17 and a half year old couldn't handle sex with someone their own age.

It's that there are creepo's out there waiting for a child to grow up just enough to so they don't get in trouble. Like how long were they waiting on that? Since the kid was 12?
