I'd say being classy and being high class are two very different things. Latter one is about money, first one is about being educated and mindful of others without flaunting it.

they aren't unrelated. the word classy stems from high class, as in behaving as a lady or a gentleman should behave

Well obviously that's the root, but today, "classy" and "high class" do have two different meanings. Someone can be high class without being classy, or classy without being high class. High class refers to socioeconomic status (esp. by birth, not necessarily someone who suddenly made loads of money) and classy is a style/attitude/personality trait.
