doubt it's a female thing, more that it's a thing not really paid attention to by men. like, i highly doubt every guy watching porn is sitting there thinking about the parts involved and imagining this dick is his dick in particular and placing himself with his physical and character traits into the scene, that's too much effort

imagining what it feels like is the point of porn but thinking yourself with your characteristics and personality and enough to 'be you in a recognizable way' in the situation is definitely effort to me

i would call 'imagining having sex with this girl as myself, bob, the 40 year old man' inserting yourself

i wouldn't call 'i imagine that ass is my ass' inserting yourself, or else everyone who faps to character/character slash imagining 'character's ass is my ass' is 'inserting themselves' which they're not

if a girl can read sam/dean and imaging being sam, why couldn't a man do the same, the only difference being your equipment matches up? it's strange to declare this a 'female thing' is all

there's also the group of men which is pretty well established to exist who like loli but imagine they are the little girl, so is that 'inserting themselves' if they imagine they're the girl? it's not all clear cut

I think you're trying to describe something more akin to voyeurism? Like, in your head, you're just watching two people go at it, but because you're fapping, you get all the good feels you can imagine them having. Yeah?

That's how I consume porn and fantasize about my ships. Hell half the time I watch porn, I just skip straight to the sex and pretend it's my ships.

my end of the line go to is imagining a threesome between three characters (who, in the movie they all appear in, do not so much as hold hands, but shh) and *occasionally* i'll insert myself as one of them (often the lone guy, even tho i'm a chick) but....mostly it's all just a movie in my head

I'm male and I mostly do that. There's usually one character in the scene that I'm identifying with, but not always.

That sounds like me. I have had a long history of making up "fantasies' which are more like stories, even before I went into puberty. The ideas that had me in a major role fell by the wayside by my teens, and if I turn up in one as myself, I'm always a minor side character, not the feature, and not the one I imagined having sex.

I tend to think this is more an issue of my self-esteem and body issues than one of gender.

there are, I guess, 3 distinct modes to how I consume smut in terms of how I mentally imagine what's going on (probably useful context: i am a cis het dude).

first, sometimes I do imagine - not myself in the scene, but I imagine what it would be like to do the things depicted in the smut. How I would feel if I was fucking that person or touching that person or whatever. But there's no real sense of myself there - I'm imagining the sensations as they would be felt by me, but the focus is entirely on the sensations and the moment of being there, not on the fact that it's me doing it. this is something i mostly do with fantasizing and that kind of thing, rather than with smut.

two, sometimes I imagine what it would be like for the people in the scene, in terms of the immediate physical presence. This is mostly with femslash stuff. and it's kind of hard to really get across what the specific thing i'm imagining is - it's a weirdly complex imaginative effort, in some ways. but you focus on the being-there of both the people in the scene, i guess, and imagine the details and physical presence and all of that.

three, sometimes there's no imaginative or mental effort and i'm just reacting on a basically animal basis to some stimulus. THING LOOKS HOT I AM HORNY. this would be mostly with smut.

but no matter what, there's never really an involved scenario involving my own presence. the point to me is that the focus is never on I'm Having Sex, it's on that immediate physicalness.
