Nobody understands my job (Cosmetology). NOBODY. The assumption is that it's 'just hair' so it's super easy and you don't have to be very smart to do it, and in fact, since you did this instead of college, you probably AREN'T very smart.

To which I say OH COSMETOLOGY ISN'T HARD NAME THE LAYERS OF THE SKIN. GO ON I WILL WAIT. HOW ABOUT YOU EXPLAIN TO ME WHY ONE HAIR CUT IS AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE AND ANOTHER IS AT A 90 DEGREE ANGLE. AND THEN AFTERWARDS YOU COULD NAME THE BONES OF THE SKULL, AND EXPLAIN TO ME THE CHEMICAL MAKEUP OF PERMS. BECAUSE I HAVE TO KNOW THESE THINGS OR I DON'T GET LICENSED. HOPE YOU PAID ATTENTION IN HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE.

There's also the fact that people act like every single color process is the same and takes the same amount of time and I have to explain why you can't come over at 7PM and expect to get two completely different colors in your hair, especially if one involves bleach I DON'T CARE WHAT THE WALMART BOX DYE SAID YOU PUT THAT DOWN.

Just the sheer amount of hand movements hair stylists make when doing a haircut makes me think it would be very physically hard on your hands and wrists, if you're doing it all day.

Oh yes. Stylists are prone to things like carpal tunnel, we have to be very careful, since our hands are our livelihood. And I have seen other stylists twist their hands in frankly ridiculous ways to get the perfect angle, so it's not like we just comb and chop.

It is, I had to find another line of work because of carpal tunnel. :(

Ugh, I can't even imagine, I love my job! I'm sorry that happened to you.

I've never thought cosmetology was easy, but I must admit that I never knew that you had to know things like the names of skin layers and skull bones. That's pretty cool, OP.

Yeah it was a bit of a shock to me back in cosmetology school. I mean, I knew I would have to know science, I was just unprepared for how MUCH science. There's biology, chemistry, AND anatomy. Cosmetology covers hair and everything from elbows down and knees down (because my state's cosmetology license also covers nails and esthetics), so we have to know muscles and bones to make sure we don't damage anything and actually know what we're doing! Obviously some of it fades over time, but the basic knowledge stays. Like riding a bike.

EDIT because in all my babble I forgot to say thanks! :)

Nah, I don't think anyone assumes that's easy.

Oh man I knew you had to go to school for it and assumed it was way harder than it looked but daaaaaaaaaaaamn.

I'm pleasantly surprised to have people tell me they assumed it was harder than it looked. It's a much better change than my (well-meaning!) cousin who told me I was too smart for this.

It always looked super intensive. Besides all that science, you have to be familiar with styles and methods and cuts and it's wild.

[personal profile] nonnymouscawitz 2016-01-09 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, before I got into this career I was not exactly fashion-forward, and now I have to stay on top of what everyone wants right now, so it's a big change. You hear a lot of horror stories about stylists who get stuck in a rut and end up basically giving the same haircut to everyone in their chair.

Coming from a friend of a nail tech: You know what? Cosmetology is hard shit. You have to learn more than just hair. You have to learn economics, how to file your own taxes, biology, the psychology of the upsell...

Really, you guys have it even harder than someone like me who specialized in something in college. Because you have to know SO FUCKING MUCH. Hell, you guys even have to make recommendations to your clients!

Thank you! And the laws, so many laws... If I ever wanted to move out of state, I'd have to go capitulate to the board of that state because the laws change wherever you go.

I feel like college is equally hard, just in a different way? But yeah, we have to constantly be learning because cosmetology changes basically every week, we have to always be up on new trends and new science, and be able to talk to clients because let's be real, I did NOT realize how much non-stylists don't know until I went to beauty school. I shudder when I think of what my hair used to look like, and I don't even particularly care about my own appearance (I prefer working on other people).

Sorry, but you don't sound too bright here as you confirm all our prejudices. Congratulations: you have gained a few knowledge points in life. Now get your head around that regular high school teach those things PLUS a helluva lot more. So keep your prices nice and low. There's so many others like you after all.

Re: Complain about things

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Psst: cosmetology school is post-secondary, so OP would have gone to "regular high school."
